Before you prepare a batch of rice water and stash it in your fridge, it's crucial to understand its limited shelf life. Unlike products with preservatives, rice water has a short expiration window. Typically, it's advised to use rice water within 24 to 48 hours when stored at room temperature, or up to 5 to 7 days when refrigerated.

Using old or expired rice water can lead to bacterial growth, which can be harmful to your skin. Signs that rice water has gone bad include a sour or unpleasant smell, changes in colour or texture, or the presence of mold.

To ensure the safety of the rice water, always store it in a clean, airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator if you're not planning to use it immediately. Additionally, if you notice any unusual changes in the appearance, smell, or taste of the rice water, it's best to err on the side of caution and discard it.

To extend the shelf life of rice water, you can add a few drops of natural preservatives, like tea tree oil or grapefruit seed extract.

Rice water benefits for skincare

Rice water offers numerous potential benefits for the skin. Its natural properties, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich elements, make it a valuable addition to skincare routines. It can soothe irritated skin, brighten and even out skin tone, minimize pores, hydrate, and act as a mild exfoliant.

Additionally, rice water may aid in oil control, combat signs of aging, and help with acne treatment and dark spot reduction. However, individual results may vary, so a patch test is recommended.
