Till now, you have seen the pictures of newly married couple actors Randeep Hooda and Lin Laishram. And, in the pictures, you must have noticed Lin wearing the Potloi- a traditional Manipur bridal wear adorned with intricate embroidery and vibrant colours.
Potloi is deeply intertwined with the heritage and cultural fabric of Manipur. In Manipur, the Meitei community bride wears this dress on her wedding day. Potloi costume is made from bamboo and cloth so that it can take a cylindrical shape. The dress is prepared only a few hours before the bride wears it.
Hanjabam Radhe Devi, a 93-year-old woman, received the esteemed Padma Shri award from the central government in 2021 in recognition of her exceptional contributions to Potloi making.
She is also known as Potloi Setpi and is celebrated for her exceptional craftsmanship in Potloi creation. Over decades, she has dedicatedly honed her skills, intricately designing the ceremonial dress with precision and expertise.
