We hardly check the label or ingredients while purchasing shampoo; whether it contains sulfate or not. But it is highly advisable to use sulfate-free shampoo for healthier hair.
Sulfate contains a chemical called surfactants which combine with water to form foam. Many household products like cleansers, toothpastes and shampoos contain this chemical.
Even though sulfate in shampoos helps removing oil and dirt from hair, natural moisture and oil is important for healthy hair. Using sulfate-based shampoo can remove excessive moisture from hair leaving them dry and unhealthy.
People with sensitive skin or those who have any skin-related issues should avoid using sulfate shampoo. Those with frizzy, dry and coloured hair should also avoid it.
