Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is also known for her beautiful saree collection. This year too, she has chosen a teal kantha stitch saree for the budget session. She has paired it with a matching border beige colour blouse. Kantha stitch is an age-old handicraft from Bengal.

The beauty of this stitch is that the shape is formed by looping threads on one surface only, so the reverse side of the fabric remains a simple kantha of straight, running stitches, while the front side is a complex geometric pattern. You can see leaves and floral embroidery on Nirmala Sitharaman's saree.

All about  kantha stitch handicraft

Kantha stitch is an age-old and traditional form of embroidery originating from the Indian subcontinent, particularly in the Bengal region. This intricate embroidery technique is characterized by its unique method of forming shapes through looping threads on one surface, creating complex geometric patterns. The reverse side of the fabric remains a simple kantha of straight, running stitches, while the front side showcases the intricate design.

The beauty of Kantha stitch lies in its simplicity and versatility. Artisans use a running stitch to create a range of patterns, including floral motifs, leaves, and various geometric shapes. This style of embroidery has gained popularity not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its cultural and historical significance.
