Bengalis love their share of seafood and looks like even the world is now recognising the vast variety of delicious dishes West Bengal has to offer. Chingri malai curry, a prawn delicacy has made news after it was selected among the top 50 seafood dishes in the world. Here are all the deets.
India's Bengali Chingri malai curry has been ranked 31 in the top '50 best seafood dish' list by Taste Atlas. It is the only entrant from India, making us all proud. It is a Bengali curry made from tiger (bagda) and king prawns (chingri) mixed with coconut milk and spices. It is a delicacy served during weddings.
The history of Chingri malai curry can be traced back to the British reign. Before partition, Hilsa fish was the go-to fish in Bengali cuisine. However, after the British took over they found prawns more appealing. This shift in tastes led to the rise of Chingri Malai.
The dish incorporates elements from Southeast Asia, and also serves foreign palates with a creamy texture.
