Rock salt, commonly known as 'sendha namak' in India is often consumed during fasting. This year Chaitra Navratri begins on April 9 during which many devotees fast for nine long days for this holy festival and switch to sendha namak from the common table salt.

What is rock salt/sendha namak?

Sendha namak is a type of salt that is primarily composed of sodium chloride (NaCl), along with various minerals and trace elements. Unlike table salt, which is heavily processed and often contains additives like iodine and anti-caking agents, rock salt is typically unrefined and harvested from salt mines or salt flats. Sendha namak has many potential health benefits including controlling blood sugar levels and keeping gut health in check.

Health benefits of switching to sendha namak

Not only during fasts, but switching to sendha namak for your regular diet has many health benefits. Here are some of them:

Rich in minerals: Rock salt (sendha namak) contains small amounts of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, and iron, which can contribute to overall health and well-being. These minerals are essential for various bodily functions, including nerve function, muscle contraction, and bone health.

Aids digestion: Rock salt is believed to stimulate the production of digestive enzymes, which can help improve digestion and alleviate digestive issues such as bloating and constipation. Some people use rock salt as a natural remedy for indigestion and gastrointestinal discomfort.

Regulates blood pressure: While excessive sodium intake is associated with high blood pressure and cardiovascular issues, moderate consumption of rock salt may help regulate blood pressure levels. This is because rock salt contains minerals like potassium and magnesium, which have vasodilatory effects and can help maintain healthy blood pressure.

Electrolyte Balance: Rock salt is a natural source of electrolytes, including sodium, potassium, and chloride, which are essential for maintaining fluid balance, nerve function, and muscle contraction. Consuming rock salt in moderation can help replenish electrolytes lost through sweating during exercise or in hot weather.

Alleviates muscle cramps: Rock salt contains minerals like magnesium and potassium, which are important for muscle function and may help prevent or alleviate muscle cramps and spasms. Adding a pinch of rock salt to your meals or drinking water can help maintain electrolyte balance and support muscle health.
