Onion peels, often discarded, actually offer several surprising benefits. They have more antioxidants than onions themselves. You can use them to make onion peel powder for cooking. You can dehydrate and blend them up, they make an excellent flavor enhancer for any of your favourite recipe.

How to make Onion Peel Powder:

Shared by blogger @vegan.challenge.club on Instagram, this is an easy recipe.

Ingredients:

4 cups of clean onion peels (remove dirty ones or the ones with any spots or residues)

Step by step way of making Onion Peel Powder:

Soak the onion peels in water for 30 minutes, then drain and rinse. Dry with a clean cloth and make sure to discard any peels with dirt or residue.

Add to a dehydrator sheet or a parchment lined baking sheet. Dehydrate in the sun for 24 hours, or alternatively in your oven at the lowest setting for 3 hours (approximately 150F).

Using a blender or coffee grinder, grind the onion peels until a powder is formed. Use as you would onion powder in recipes.

Health benefits of onion peels:

Onion peels are rich in antioxidants, particularly quercetin, which can help combat free radicals and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Additionally, onion peels can be used to make a natural dye, and they contain compounds that may have anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties, making them potentially valuable for various home and health applications.
