Do you love guacamole dip but find avocados too pricey? Here’s a great way to make your favourite dip without them. You read that right! If you want to make a guacamole-style dip without avocados, you can use green peas and create a delicious and healthy alternative.
Ingredients:
2 cups frozen green peas (thawed)
1/2 red onion, finely chopped
1-2 cloves garlic, minced
1-2 small green chilies, finely chopped (adjust to your spice preference)
1-2 ripe tomatoes, diced
1/4 cup fresh cilantro leaves, chopped
Juice of 1-2 limes
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
Start by peeling the peas out of the pods if you are using fresh matar or green peas. Or start by thawing the green peas if you are using the frozen ones. You can do this by blanching them in boiling water for a few minutes or microwaving them according to the package instructions. Once thawed, let them cool to room temperature.
In a food processor, combine the thawed green peas, minced garlic, and chopped green chilies. Pulse until you achieve a chunky texture. Be careful not to over-process; you want some texture to remain.
Transfer the pea mixture to a mixing bowl.
Add the chopped red onion, diced tomatoes, and chopped corander leaves to the pea mixture. Stir everything together until well combined.
Squeeze the juice of 1-2 limes into the mixture, depending on your taste preference. Lime juice adds flavor and freshness to the dip.
Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remember to taste as you go and adjust the seasoning as needed. Let the green pea guacamole sit in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
Serve your avocado-free green pea guacamole with tortilla chips, vegetable sticks, or as a topping for tacos, nachos, or grilled kebabs. Enjoy!
