According to nutrition coach, Ryan Fernando, your dry fruits may harbour contaminants as they have travelled kilometres to reach your doorstep. Here are some more details.

Nutritionist reveals why we should wash dry fruits before eating

Ryan Fernando took to Instagram and advised his followers to always wash dry fruits before consuming them. The nutritionist advises tossing the dry fruits into some water and shaking it up well at least 3 times to get rid of any dirt, mud or bacteria on them.  Washing them properly will remove other contaminants too.

Ryan also revealed that since dry fruits travel from different parts of India to reach your doorstep, they may contain rat urine or may have been infested by cockroaches.

Dry fruits can grow fungus and bacteria

The celebrity nutritionist further revealed that dry fruits can grow fungus and bacteria and can make you sick. Fungus releases a poison called aflatoxins, which can be fatal to humans if consumed. He advises that if one is soaking their dry fruits even for five minutes, they should wash them properly right before consuming. So be mindful before eating dry fruits or feeding them to your kids. He also revealed that one should only wash and never soak pistachios and walnuts before eating.
