Drinking coffee in the morning is a common ritual for many, serving as a vital boost to kickstart the day. Its rich aroma and caffeine content provide a welcomed jolt of energy, fueling productivity and alertness.

Many of us rely on our morning coffee to kickstart the day. However, a content creator and podcaster Mel Robbins has suggested a change in this routine. She advises against drinking coffee immediately after waking up, as it can lead to higher cortisol levels and increased feelings of anxiety.

Instead, she recommends starting a day with a glass of water before enjoying your coffee or tea and avoiding the consumption of caffeine for an hour or two after waking up.

Beginning your day with coffee leads to a rapid delivery of caffeine to the receptors that activate your body. Consequently, the surge of caffeine displaces adenosine, elevating adenosine levels in your system.

Cortisol assists in regulating your body's sleep-wake cycle, also known as the circadian rhythm. Nonetheless, the stimulating properties of morning caffeinated coffee could potentially elevate cortisol levels.

Side effects of coffee on an empty stomach

Increased stomach acid production: Coffee can stimulate the production of stomach acid, which may lead to discomfort or exacerbate existing gastrointestinal issues on an empty stomach.

Gastric irritation: Drinking coffee on an empty stomach may irritate the lining of the stomach, potentially causing feelings of nausea or discomfort.

Acid reflux: Coffee can relax the lower esophageal sphincter, allowing stomach acid to flow back up into the esophagus, leading to symptoms of acid reflux.

Jitters and nervousness: The rapid absorption of caffeine on an empty stomach may lead to jitteriness, nervousness, or an increased heart rate.
