Dark chocolates are known to be a great source of antioxidants. However, dark chocolates are not as healthy as it sounds, research suggests. Recently, American brand Hershey’s was hitting the headlines for having dangerous levels of heavy metals like lead and cadmium in their dark chocolate bars. And, this has raised concerns among dark chocolate lovers.
A news article by ConsumerReports.org tested the levels of arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury in 28 types of dark chocolate bars from various brands and 5 out of 28 that were tested were found to have lead and cadmium levels higher than what is considered safe for consumption.
Moreover, a study published in the Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety journal, said that lifetime consumption of high levels of cadmium can cause chronic kidney damage.
