Ballet flats have made a strong comeback in the fashion world, this year’s New York Fashion Week is proof. Celebrities including Kylie Jenner, Hailey Bieber and Katie Holmes have all sported the look this summer. Last week, Meghan Markle was seen wearing a pair of Chanel slingbacks during her visit to the 2023 Invictus Games in Germany.

Despite their popularity, there's a downside to these chic shoes: experts warn that ballet flats may not be the best choice for foot health. Podiatrist Robert Khorramian, based in California, goes as far as to label them as the "worst offender" in a 2022 article from Who What Wear. He points out that they lack proper support, a concern also noted by WebMD.

Khorramian explains that prolonged wear of ballet flats can lead to conditions like metatarsalgia neuroma and plantar fasciitis, and may even harm the fatty tissue beneath the foot. This can result in uncomfortable issues such as corns and calluses.

In addition to potential foot injuries, ballet flats might contribute to hip, knee, and back problems due to their insufficient support, according to WebMD.

For those still keen on embracing the trend, the expert suggests opting for shoes with cushioned soles and ensuring there's ample room for your toes to rest comfortably.
