According to a recent study, the effects of Covid-19 infection on the thyroid gland can remain even after one year. The study was presented during the 24th European Congress of Endocrinology.
Pertinently, the thyroid function is crucial for metabolism, growth and development. By continuously releasing a stable amount of thyroid hormones, it aids in the regulation of numerous body functions.
For the study, researchers examined more than 100 patients admitted to the hospital with severe Covid-19. They analysed their thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) to better characterise thyroid involvement and tracked its progression over time.
Researchers observed a clear link between thyroid dysfunction and Covid-19 infection. They also found that severe Covid-19 disease impacts thyroid function through a variety of mechanisms.
