As temperatures drop below zero in many parts of the country, staying warm while going about your work becomes all the more important. Though it might be tempting to stay in your cozy blanket, getting some light exercise daily can help you keep warm. Fitness experts have suggested indoor walks, aerobics, yoga, HIIT, and working out at a home gym, as nice alternatives to stepping out of the house in this biting cold.

How much exercise is optimal for winters?

According to a report by Hindustan Times, though 10,000 steps a day are optimal, a minimum of 7,000 steps every day in these freezing winter months can be equally beneficial, and, as a bonus, can help you keep warm. Additionally, on those lazy Sunday mornings when it’s hard to get out of the house or get a proper workout, cardio - including cycling, walking, and training on the elliptical - is key.

What to avoid during cold months?

While exercise is important, taking certain precautions is also essential during the winter months. For instance, wearing warm clothing that covers up your extremities, and avoiding spicy foods, is of the utmost importance. Looking after the elderly, young children, immunocompromised individuals and other members of your family who might be susceptible to the cold is equally important. In addition, for adventure sports and winter sports enthusiasts, putting on layers upon layers of warm, insulating clothing isn’t enough. Adequate safety precautions also need to be taken, to avoid potential injuries that are only going to be made worse by the near-zero or subzero temperatures.

Proper nutrition is important as well because your body won’t have anything to fuel it during a winter workout if you don’t eat right. Experts suggest stocking up on essentials, including toiletries and carbohydrate-heavy foods, as a precautionary measure. Furthermore, it is a good idea to keep a close watch on the weather forecast and look out for any extreme weather warnings.
