International Yoga Day 2023: History, theme, date and significance of this day

International Yoga Day is celebrated on June 21 every year, to spread awareness about the importance of this age-old practice which is beneficial for not only our mind and body but also to our soul. Regular practice of Yoga benefits in getting relief from back pain, improvement in the sleep cycle and heart health.

International Yoga Day 2023 Theme

International Yoga Day came into existence after its incorporation into the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. This year, the theme for International Yoga Day is 'Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbkam'. This theme aims towards showcasing our collective aspiration for "one Earth, one Family, one Future. 

International Day of Yoga 2023 Significance

International Day of Yoga is celebrated to encourage mindfulness, stress reduction and overall health. This day holds the great significance of shedding light on the importance of psychological and physical well-being.  

History of International Yoga Day 2023

On September 27, 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the first time suggested the establishment of International Yoga Day, following which a resolution designating June 21 as International Yoga Day was introduced by the then Indian Ambassador, Asoke Kumar Mukerji.

The date June 21 was chosen as it falls on the Summer Solstice, when there is the most sunlight throughout the year. New Delhi hosted the first International Yoga Day on June 21, 2015 and is now celebrated globally.

Unique features of International Yoga Day 2023

Ocean Ring Of Yoga

The 9 ports around the world will host Indian naval ships that will take part in the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) demonstration. The CYP will be organised by the Ministry of Ports, shipping, and Waterways, in nations where they have signed MoUs. 

Yoga Bharatmala

The chain of demonstration will be performed in unison by the Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, ITBP, BSF and BRO. Yoga Sagarmala will witness yoga along the Indian coastline. There will be a Yoga demonstration on the upper deck of the INS Vikrant. 

Har Aangan Yoga

The goal of this year's International Day of Yoga 2023, is to achieve observation of Yoga at the village level through Anganwadis, Health and wellness centres and educational institutions.
