During the holy month of Ramadan devotees observe long fasts and are allowed to have food and water only before sunrise and after sunset. But diabetic patients must keep some important things in mind while fasting.
- Diabetic patients must visit their doctor before the fasting starts or consult them regularly during the month long fasting
- They must keep checking their blood sugar levels regularly and include a combination of carbs, fiber, healthy fat and protein for Sehri and Iftaar meals
- Getting enough sleep is a key to a healthy fasting month
- Avoid eating over-processed foods like maida, refined sugar, deep fried, bread, etc
- The tradition of breaking the fast with a date is quite healthy. Dates can be used as a sweetener for desserts too
- Experts recommend consuming good amount of fruits and vegetables for breaking the fast
- They also advise to stick to only lean meats and seafood as much as possible
- It is recommended to drink enough water and non-sweetened beverages during or between the main meals
- Avoid sugary drinks, canned juices and aerated drinks
- Try to avoid tea, coffee, soda, as they are diuretic in nature and might cause an increase in glucose levels
