According to a study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, skipping meals or eating fewer than 3 meals per day can shorten life span.
For the study, researchers looked at the eating behaviours of 24,011 adults aged 40 years or older.
The team found that participants who skipped breakfast were more likely to develop fatal heart diseases and those who skipped lunch or dinner increased their risk of premature death from all causes.
Skipping meals usually means eating more at one time which can aggravate blood sugar regulation and lead to health issues, study authors concluded.
