According to Dr. John Dani from the University of Pennsylvania, the craving occurs because of two reasons; the way nicotine affects memory and how nicotine combines with alcohol to reduce dopamine levels. The two mechanisms together make cigarettes seem delicious.

Hence, the reason people keep smoking and drinking together is to release stress hormones and regain happiness.
