Popular show Shark Tank is currently in its third season. Recently, shark and Executive Director of Emcure Pharmaceuticals, Namita Thapar, opened up about her struggles with perimenopause. Perimenopause is the time before menopause and many women experience an array of symptoms due to hormone changes. Let us know more about the condition.
During a pitch by the founders of Matri who manufacture an electronic device that offers relief from menstrual pain, Namita revealed that she became anaemic during her perimenopause. She said, "Perimenopause usually starts in your mid 40’s. You experience mood swings, insomnia, hot flashes and many other symptoms. Most women are not aware of the symptoms, treatment options and it can be a very rough & disruptive phase in their lives. It’s been a tough phase for me personally. I was happy to use the Matri pitch to share my journey and educate."
Perimenopause is the transitional period leading up to menopause, marking the end of a woman's reproductive years. It typically occurs in the late 30s or early 40s but can start early as well. Hormonal fluctuations, particularly a decline in estrogen levels, can result in various physical and emotional changes. The duration of perimenopause varies, but it usually lasts for several years before menopause.
Irregular periods
Menstrual cycles may become shorter or longer, and the flow may be lighter or heavier. Some may even skip their periods.
Hot flashes
Sudden and intense feelings of heat, often accompanied by sweating, can be disruptive and may occur both during the day and at night.
Change in sleep patterns
Falling asleep on time may become a task during perimenopause.
Mood swings
Hormonal fluctuations can contribute to mood swings, irritability, and changes in emotional well-being.
Vaginal changes
Decreased estrogen levels can lead to changes in the vaginal tissues, causing dryness, discomfort, and an increased risk of urinary tract infections.
