In a welcoming move, New York City Mayor Eric Adams on May 26, 2023, signed a bill banning discrimination based on height and weight during employment, housing and public accommodation processes.

However, there are some exceptions in this law as it will not apply to those jobs which have an essential requirement for the employee to have a certain height or weight to be able to perform the job effectively.

It was further noted that the law will be effective within 180 days and will take effect from November 22.

Moreover, it is worth taking note that there is research which suggests that overweight women in the US are on average earning $5.25 less per hour, due to the so-called wage penalty. And, now the passing of this law is being appreciated by many.
