What’s worse than being single? Having to pay extra because you’re not in a relationship.
According to a study conducted by the real estate firm Zillow, New York City is the most expensive place to live for singles.
As per the study findings, singles pay on average $19,500 more a year for a one-bedroom, compared to someone living with a partner in the same area. This figure rises even higher in Manhattan; $24,000.
San Francisco, also known as a high-price city, charges $14,000 'singles tax' for a one-bedroom apartment. However, cities like Detroit and Cleveland have the lowest singles tax at $4,483 and $4,387 respectively.
Partners who live together in New York City save an average of $39,000 per year, Zillow study concluded.
