Buddha Purnima 2023: Major Buddhist spots in India visited by devotees from across the world

Buddha Purnima is a major festival celebrated in many parts of India. This year, it is being celebrated on May 5. This day is celebrated in honour of the birth and enlightenment of Lord Buddha. The festival focuses on respect for humanity and all living beings.

Some of the historical monuments, stupas and places located in India have been the center of attraction for Buddhist devotees from all over the world. Here are some places devotees can visit on the occasion of Buddha Purnima.

Bodh Gaya, Bihar 

It is said that Mahatma Buddha attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya. Mahabodhi Temple is a famous Buddhist Vihara located here. 

Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh 

Sarnath is located near Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Lord Buddha gave his first sermon here. Dharmachakra Pravartan started from this place and a Buddhist Dharamshala is also situated here. 

Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh 

This place is in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. At the age of 80, Gautama Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana which means liberation or final death.
