Have you ever thought if only there was a place where you could cry your heart open without any judgement? Well, if yes then this place is just for you.
New York based Anthony Villiotti has opened NYC’s first pop-up ‘cry spa’ where people can book slots for for $20 for crying. Villiotti introduced the concept of cathartic wail sessions in NYC last November. Notably this place is neither a special group nor any kind of therapy. While speaking with The Post, the founder said that New Yorkers are used to struggling through their daily life, without a safe and healthy space for them to cry it out. The biggest reason people visit is after experiencing a bad breakup or unrequited love, Villiotti added.
Till now Villiotti has organised 6 tearful fêtes over the past four months at various locations across Manhattan, including community centers, art galleries and office rental sites.
For $20, New Yorkers can book a 30-minute appointment in a private 'cry room' to cry their heart out and go back.
Villiotti and his team make guests sign a waiver which says that they won’t be receiving any psychological support or counseling, however, they do provide an on-call, licensed therapist who helps clients who start experiencing a mental health crisis during any of their cry sessions.
The sob parlour provides special playlists of songs including including songs from the hip-hop, R&B, pop and rock genres.
The rooms are dimly lit with a tear drop cushion provided for private crying sessions.
Crying is a natural and healthy emotional response that serves several important functions for our mental and physical well-being. Here are five benefits of crying:
Emotional Release: Crying serves as a mechanism for emotional release, allowing us to express and process intense emotions such as sadness, grief, frustration, or joy. It helps to alleviate emotional tension and provides a sense of relief and catharsis, promoting emotional balance and resilience.
Stress Reduction: Shedding tears triggers the release of endorphins and other feel-good hormones, which can help reduce stress, anxiety, and tension.
Mood Improvement: Crying can improve mood and mental well-being by lifting the burden of pent-up emotions and negative thoughts. It can help to release emotional toxins and facilitate emotional processing, leading to a sense of emotional clarity, comfort, and inner peace.
Social Connection: Crying can strengthen social bonds and foster empathy and connection with others. When we cry in front of someone or witness someone else crying, it can evoke feelings of compassion, understanding, and support, deepening interpersonal relationships and promoting emotional intimacy.
Physical Cleansing: Tears contain stress hormones and toxins that are expelled from the body through crying. This physical cleansing process helps to detoxify the body and maintain emotional and physical balance. Additionally, tears help to lubricate and protect the eyes, keeping them moist and healthy.
