Durga Ashtami also referred to as Mahashtami is the eighth day of the Navratri festivities. It is considered to be one of the most significant days of the extended celebrations. Ashtami, meaning ‘the eighth’ is dedicated to Goddess Mahagauri, one of the nine forms of Goddess Durga. This year, it will be celebrated on October 13, 2021.

According to beliefs, Goddess Kali appeared on this day from the forehead of Maa Durga and killed Chanda, Munda and Rakthabija, the asuras or demons who were with Mahishasura.

There are various puja rituals on Maha Ashtami. Families mostly in the northern part of the country hold Kanya Puja or Kanya Bhoj on this day. Devotees also observe a day-long fast and worship Goddess Shakti. It is believed that on this special day, the goddess Durga gives blessings for success, prosperity, peace and happiness to all.
