BV Subba Rao Hegde, an 84-year-old man from Shivamogga in Karnataka has been continuously working towards preserving over 100 varieties of mangoes, in his backyard!

His passion for mangoes comes from his craze for mango pickle.

He visited over 16 villages in the Western Ghats to collect local varieties of 'appe midis' or the mangoes most commonly used as pickles.

Now, his tiny backyard is flourishing with these different varieties.

Hegde was also honoured with the 'Award of Excellence' for innovative farming at the National Horticulture Fair 2021.
