If you struggle to fall asleep at night, a glass of warm milk can be particularly helpful. Researchers have now figured out the science behind this age-old practice as well.

While it is normally thought that tryptophan in milk enhances sleep, scientists have found in a study that a mixture of milk peptides, called casein tryptic hydrolysate (CTH) also relieve stress and improve sleep.

Publishing in the American Chemical Society's Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the team tested the best of these bioactive peptides in mice and observed that 25 per cent of them fell asleep more quickly and 400 per cent of them witnessed improvement in sleep duration compared to the control group.

The researchers hope the discovery of the specific peptides might someday aid the development of new, natural sleep remedies.
