Politics in Uttar Pradesh hit fast lane ahead of the inauguration of the Purvanchal Expressway by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday.

Former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav accused the BJP of trying to steal the credit for the work done by his Samajwadi Party government during his 2012-17 tenure.

In a cryptic tweet on Tuesday morning, Akhilesh Yadav slammed the Expressway inauguration and shared pictures of SP workers riding cycles on it.

In a tug-of-war of sorts, the SP cadre symbolically inaugurated the expressway at different locations by showering flowers and riding bicycles as the Ghazipur district administration denied permission for Akhilesh Yadav's Rath Yatra citing PM's event.

Pointing out that the Expressway work started during his term, the SP chief charged that the Yogi Adityanath government compromised of the quality of the 340-km-long Expressway to open it ahead of the 2022 polls.

Akhilesh Yadav also claimed that the BJP was five years behind the SP as during the SP regime, fighter jets had landed on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway and now a similar exercise would be undertaken on the Purvanchal Expressway.
