The shocking murder of 28-year-old journalist Mukesh Chandrakar has brought the grim realities of investigative journalism to the forefront. Mukesh, a fearless voice against corruption, was silenced after uncovering a massive 120 crore rupee scandal.

Here is what we know so far:

Disappearance and Discovery

The new year began with a chilling mystery as Mukesh Chandrakar went missing on January 1. The suspense ended tragically when his body was found on January 3 in the septic tank of contractor Suresh Chandrakar’s house in Bijapur. Investigators revealed the gruesome details: Mukesh had been bludgeoned with an iron rod, his body concealed in the septic tank, and the tank had been sealed shut.

Arrests and Accusations

The Chhattisgarh Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) acted swiftly, arresting Suresh Chandrakar in Hyderabad. Alongside him, three more individuals—Ritesh Chandrakar, Mukesh’s cousin; Dinesh, a relative; and Mahendra Ramteke, a contractor employee—were taken into custody. Each played a role in the grisly aftermath of the murder.

The Scandal That Cost a Life

Mukesh’s investigation into a road project scandal had uncovered a web of corruption. Originally budgeted at 50 crore rupees, the project’s cost had ballooned to 120 crore rupees without explanation. His reports on his YouTube channel 'Bastar Junction' had exposed substandard construction and implicated Suresh Chandrakar, casting a spotlight on the murky dealings behind the scenes.

Threats and Intimidation

Following his exposé, Mukesh had faced relentless threats. His brother Yukesh revealed that Suresh Chandrakar and his associates had issued dire warnings. Local voices echoed these claims, describing Suresh as a figure of influence who resorted to bribery and intimidation to secure contracts, silencing dissent with fear.

A Legacy of Courage

Mukesh was no stranger to danger. His fearless journalism had previously exposed numerous corruption and crime cases in Bijapur and Bastar. His role in the 2021 release of CRPF commando Rakeshwar Singh Manhas from Maoist captivity was a testament to his dedication, earning him police accolades.

Outcry and Demand for Justice

The journalist’s murder sparked widespread outrage. Colleagues and citizens blocked the national highway at Hospital Chowk, demanding justice. The Editors Guild of India condemned the act, calling for a thorough investigation and better protection for journalists. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi demanded severe punishment for the culprits and compensation for Mukesh’s family.

Political Blame Game

The murder also triggered a political storm. Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma accused the Congress of harboring the accused contractor, while the BJP released a photo of him with Congress president Deepak Baij. The Congress countered, stating the contractor had joined the BJP the previous year. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai assured the public of swift action, with a SIT in place and the contractor’s assets frozen.

 A Call for Justice

Mukesh Chandrakar’s murder is a stark reminder of the risks faced by journalists, especially those uncovering corruption in rural areas. As the investigation unfolds, the call for justice grows louder, with the nation watching closely to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
