Karan Johar hosted Kajol and Rani Mukerji on the recent ‘Koffee with Karan’ episode and it mostly felt like a ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ reunion. They delved into their onscreen and off-screen bond.

Despite their familial connection, Kajol disclosed an ‘organic distance’ between them, even though Rani entered the industry during Kajol's peak.

Karan remarked on their distant relationship, noting Kajol's 'silent distance' from Rani. He expressed surprise at their lack of interaction despite being cousins, expecting a closer bond.

‘I used to wonder what kind of family is this? They’re not even talking to each other. I thought they are cousins, it will all be good,’ he said.

Rani explained that she had known Kajol as a kid, and admitted that the relationship between the two ‘was a bit strange.’

‘She was always Kajol didi for me,’ she added.

Rani expressed the challenge in understanding why relationships change over time. Despite some distance from Kajol, she emphasized a stronger bond with Kajol's younger sister, Tanisha Mukherjee, which persists even now.

When Karan asked how they got closer to each other and built a relationship later in life, Rani said that it actually happened when they lost their fathers.

‘As families when you lose your loved ones, and I was very close to Kajol’s dad. When you go through tough times, when you go through loss in the family in terms of people you love, I think that’s when everyone comes closer,’ Rani said.

She also said that age probably had something to do with their equation, and said that there is a ‘difference when you are 17 and when you are 40, you grow wiser as people. You also learn to not bother about the little things.’

Apart from ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, Kajol and Rani Mukerji have never starred in leading roles in the same film.
