'Thackeray' to 'Thalaivii': 5 films based on the lives of Indian politicians

Majority of Bollywood celebrities have tried to stay away from politics time and again. However, they have never backed out from playing prominent politicians on the big screen. 
Let's take a look at some of the most talked-about films based on the lives of Indian politicians.

Thalaivi (2021)

Starring Kangana Ranaut, this biopic chronicles the life of actor-turned-chief minister Jayaram Jayalalitha. It shows how she challenged the male-dominated politicial culture and went on to rule the state of Tamil Nadu

The Accidental Prime Minister (2019)

Starring Anupam Kher, this film is based on the book 'The Accidental Prime Minister' by political analyst Sanjaya Baru.  It explores Manmohan Singh's tenure as the Prime Minister and shows how he became a victim to Congress' attempt to boost politician Rahul Gandhi. Akshaye Khanna played Sanjaya Baru, while Aahana Kumar potrayed the role of politician Priyanka Gandhi. Sonia Gandhi was played by Suzanne Bernert.

Thackeray (2019)

This biopic shows the rise of Shiv Sena party founder Bal Thackeray from controversial cartoonist to powerful Mumbai politician. The film starred Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Amrita Rao, and Rajeev Panday.

PM Narendra Modi (2019)

The Omung Kumar-directorial chronicles the rise of Narendra Modi from a poor tea-seller to finally being elected as the 14th prime minister of India. Vivek Oberio starred in the titular role.

Gandhi (1982)

This acclaimed biographical drama shows how Mohandas Gandhi returns to British India from South Africa and begins a non-violent resistance campaign against the British rule over India. Initially dismissed by English officials, Gandhi and his cause eventually becomes internationally renowned, and his passive protest moves India towards independence. The Richard Attenborough-directorial starred Sir Ben Kingsley in the titular role. 

The film earned 11 nominations at the 55th Academy Awards, winning eight including for the Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor (for Kingsley).
