Women's Day 2023: A look at inspirational women-led films

Women-centric films have always struck a chord with the audience as they try to ensure that the female population gets their due credit and respect onscreen. Even though there’s still a long way to go, there are a few films that have tried to show the power of women and their resilience.

Here are five women-centric Bollywood films that should be on everyone’s watchlist.

Mimi (2021)

Mimi, an aspiring actress from a small town, agrees to bear a child for a visiting couple seeking a surrogate mother. However, her experience takes unexpected turns.

Pink (2014)
Director – Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury
Cast - Amitabh Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari, Vijay Varma, Angad Bedi
Mrinal, who is molested by a politician’s nephew, tries to file an FIR against him with the help of her friends. Deepak, a retired lawyer, helps them to fight the case when the subsequent case gets rigged.

Mardaani (2014)
Director: Pradeep Sarkar
Cast: Rani Mukerji, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Jisshu Sengupta, Saanand Verma, Avneet Kaur
Rani plays the role of a fearless senior inspector Shivani Shivaji Roy who works hard to uncover a Delhi-based child trafficking cartel.

English Vinglish (2012)
Director: Gauri Shinde
Cast: Sridevi, Adil Hussain, Mehdi Nebbou, Priya Anand
Shashi, a middle-class housewife and caterer, is mocked by her family members for not knowing English. She tries to learn the language which helps her rediscovers herself and she gets to know her worth.

Kahaani (2012)
Director: Sujoy Ghosh
Cast: Vidya Balan, Parambrata Chatterjee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Saswata Chatterjee
The thriller drama shows a pregnant woman, played by Vidya Balan, who travels from London to Kolkata to find her missing husband. She tries to solve the riddle of the conspiracy behind her husband's disappearance. However, the film ends with a shocking twist.
