If you've not been in tune with Bollywood movies this year, you could very well be living under a rock. But if you are confused and don't know where to start, we have curated a list of this year's best Hindi films. From Shoojit Sircar's biographical drama 'Sardar Udham' to Taapsee Pannu's romantic thriller 'Haseen Dilruba', Bollywood has really delivered in 2021. 


Sardar Udham | Amazon Prime

In Shoojit Sircar's film Sardar Udham, Vicky Kaushal delivers a scintillating portrayal of revolutionary Udham Singh, who assassinated General Michael O'Dwyer to avenge the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The film's riveting storyline, made it an instant hit with Indian film fans, evoking just the right amount of patriotic fervour.

 

Shershaah | Amazon Prime

'Shershaah' is another biopic which found resonance with the masses. Directed by Vishnuvardhan, the film gives an insight into the life of Kargil war hero Captain Vikram Batra. Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani get under the skin of Vikram Batra and his lady love Dimple Cheema effortlessly. The film will send you on an emotional roller coaster, and you will be left crooning 'Raataan Lambiyaan' which has perhaps been the biggest hits of this year.


Mimi | Netflix

In comedy-drama 'Mimi', Kriti Sanon delivers a career-best performance as a young woman who decides to get pregnant, in order to be a surrogate for a foreign couple. She is supported superbly by seasoned actors Pankaj Tripathi and Supriya Pathak. The film will make you laugh and cry at the same time. 


Sherni | Amazon Prime

Vidya Balan is an actor par excellence when it comes to her craft. In 'Sherni', she plays an IFS officer who does her job with integrity taking on patronising men, while she tries to resolve a man-animal conflict. The film exposes the deep fault lines of our patriarchal culture, while delivering a nuanced social message.


Rashmi Rocket | ZEE5

In sports drama 'Rashmi Rocket', Taapsee Pannu enthralled audiences with a power-packed performance. Taapsee plays Rashmi, a sprinter from a small village in Gujarat's Rann of Kutch, who is all set to bring glory to the nation because of her exceptional talent, but is stopped in her tracks, as she fights for her identity, after a failed gender test. 


Nail Polish | ZEE5

'Nail Polish' is an intriguing crime thriller that manages to sustain its gripping, edgy narration till the end. A murder mystery with shocking twists, it explores the human mind like never before. A lawyer and his client are entangled in a crisis that slips into the territory of past trauma, and split personalities. Actor Manav Kaul and Arjun Rampal deliver brilliant performances, and there is already demand for its sequel. 


Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar | Amazon Prime
In Dibakar Banerjee's dark comedy, 'Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar', Parineeti Chopra plays a a bank executive, while Arjun Kapoor plays a suspended cop. The duo has nothing in common, but decide to team up and escape, and the result is chaotic. The film underlines a story of class division, corporate greed, misogyny, and privilege, with protagonists from opposing worlds battling for coexistence. 


Ankahi Kahaniya | Netflix
'Ankahi Kahaniya' is an anthology of three short films depicting unusual love stories unfolding in large cities. The poignant stories include a store employee who falls in love with a mannequin at the shop he works in, a young romance set in the age of single-screen theatres, where watching a film together would mean seeing the person you love, and finally an urban couple in plush Mumbai who come together due to their cheating spouses.


Bell Bottom | Amazon Prime
'Bell Bottom' starring Akshay Kumar is based on a series of plane hijackings set in the 1980s, that resulted in the Indian government caving into terrorist demands, and engaging an undercover agent code-named 'Bellbottom' to save 210 hostages. Bellbottom is your typical family entertainer, where Akshay Kumar, our quintessential Bollywood hero saves the day!


Haseen Dilruba | Netflix
'Haseen Dilruba' stars Taapsee Pannu and Vikrant Massey, and the film will give you 'Gone Girl' vibes. A beautiful young woman obsessed with raunchy crime novels is investigated for the murder of her husband. But as they say, love conquers all, this romantic thriller has a plot twist that will leave you spellbound.
