Rajasthan police has reportedly claimed that close to half of all rape cases filed in the state are false.

Director General of Police, Umesh Mishra on 16 January 2023 said that 41% of registered rape cases in Rajasthan were found to be false, according to news agency ANI.

The police chief added that at the national level, the proportion of false rape cases is 8%. Mishra said that this showed that either other states do not register cases or treat them as complaints.

He said that in 2022, there was a 68% increase in proceedings against those who filed false cases.
