Dalit girl gangraped, doused with diesel, set on fire, say UP police; victim in 'serious condition'

In a horrifying crime reported from Uttar Pradesh, a Dalit girl was allegedly gangraped and then set on fire in Pilibhit. The 16-year-old victim is in a serious condition, and being treated at the district hospital.

Police said that two men had been arrested for first raping, then attempting to kill the girl by pouring diesel on her and setting her on fire.

The incident occurred on 7 September 2022, but came to light when a video of the victim narrating her ordeal went viral on 10 September. The girl's statement has been recorded.

The accused have been charged under the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act, the SC/ST (Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
