Amid growing outrage over the death of a woman after allegedly being dragged by a car for almost 7 km, the police are now being asked to probe if the victim was first sexually assaulted.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) on 2 January 2023 wrote to the Delhi Police Commissioner, seeking a post-mortem examination to check if the victim was molested or raped.

The 20-year-old died on 1 January 2023 after her scooty was allegedly hit by a car, she got tangled in the wheels, and was dragged for a long distance. The accused have been arrested.

Commenting on the incident, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena said that his "head hangs in shame". Saxena called the incident an "inhuman crime", and said he was "shocked at the monstrous insensitivity" of the accused who were later arrested. He also issued an appeal to "not resort to opportunistic scavenging".
