'Brahmastra' to 'The Kashmir Files’: A look at Bollywood’s highest-grossing films of 2022

2022 has been a rough year for Bollywood with many big-ticket films failing to pull moviegoers to the theatres despite having a good cast. However, a handful of films performed exceptionally well at the ticket booths and revived the industry from the challenging time.

Here are the top five films of the year in terms of net grossing amount:

‘Brahmāstra’
The Ayan Mukerji directorial starred Amitabh Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Mouni Roy among others. The film received mixed reviews from critics and the audience. The fantasy action adventure revolves around Shiva who is on the brink of falling in love with Isha but his life takes an unexpected turn when he discovers he has the power to control fire and a connection to a secret society of guardians.
Released on September 9, 2022, the film earned over ₹431 crores worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2022.

‘The Kashmir Files’       
Directed by Vivek Agnihotri, the film is based on the exodus of Kashmiri Hindus from the Valley during the 1990s. It starred Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, and Pallavi Joshi among others. The film received immense love from the audience as well as the critics. It was released on March 11, 2022, and was declared a commercial hit. It earned around ₹340.92 crores worldwide.

‘Drishyam 2’
The crime-thriller, starring Ajay Devgn, Akshaye Khanna, Tabu, Shriya Saran, and Ishita Dutta, is the sequel to the 2015 film ‘Drishyam’. The Abhishek Pathak directorial sees a seven-year-old case related to Vijay and his family reopen. A series of unexpected events reveal the truth and threaten to change everything for the Salgaonkars.
The film, which was released on November 18, 2022, has made a collection of ₹291.28 crores worldwide.

‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’
Directed by Anees Bazmee, the horror-comedy starred Tabu, Kartik Aaryan, and Kiara Advani in the lead roles. The film is the second installment in the ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ franchise. The film shows how Reet and Ruhan’s paths cross and their journey leads to an abandoned mansion that is haunted by a dreaded spirit who has been trapped for 18 years. The film was released in theatres on May 20, 2022, and it earned ₹266.88 crores worldwide.

‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’
The biographical drama, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, starred Alia Bhatt in the titular role. The film is loosely based on the true story of Ganga Jagjivandas Kathiawadi, popularly known as Gangubai Kothewali, whose life was documented in the book ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’ written by S. Hussain Zaidi. The film was released in theatres on February 25, 2022. It premiered at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival before its theatrical release. It has earned ₹209.77 crosses globally.
