Bharti Airtel Partners with Nokia for 4G and 5G Expansion in India

Bharti Airtel has announced a significant partnership with Nokia to expand its 4G and 5G network infrastructure across key Indian regions. This strategic move aims to enhance the telco's network capacity while modernizing its existing systems with advanced technology.

Nokia AirScale Advanced Tech

As per the contract, Nokia will deploy equipment from its cutting-edge 5G AirScale portfolio, which includes base stations, baseband units, and the latest Massive MIMO radios. These components will be powered by Nokia's ReefShark System-on-Chip technology. The deal also includes modernizing Airtel’s current 4G network with multiband radios and baseband equipment, ensuring seamless 5G readiness.

Additionally, Airtel will benefit from Nokia's MantaRay Network Management, which employs AI-based tools for intelligent monitoring and management of network operations.

Leadership Perspectives

Commenting on the partnership, Gopal Vittal, Vice Chairman and MD of Bharti Airtel, stated, “Airtel's strategic partnership with Nokia will future-proof our network infrastructure, offering customers an unparalleled user experience. The network will also be eco-friendly to minimize environmental impact.”

Pekka Lundmark, President and CEO of Nokia, highlighted the benefits, saying, “Our AirScale portfolio and AI-based services will enhance the energy efficiency of Airtel’s network, enabling premium 5G capacity and the highest quality of service for subscribers.”

Airtel's Financial Growth and Market Position

Bharti Airtel continues to lead the telecom sector with an impressive Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) of ₹233 for the recent quarter, up from ₹211 in Q1 FY25. The telco reported a 168% year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit, reaching ₹3,593 crore in Q2 FY25, compared to ₹1,341 crore a year ago. This reflects a 15% jump in ARPU from ₹203 in Q2 FY24, underscoring Airtel's robust market position.

Looking Ahead

This collaboration with Nokia positions Airtel as a leader in delivering advanced network capabilities, ensuring both high-quality connectivity and environmental sustainability for its users.
