<p>This collective effort marks a crucial step in the ongoing battle to eliminate the drug menace from society.</p>
<p>Launched under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the campaign has evolved into a grassroots movement, with villages and towns actively participating in the fight against drugs.</p>
<p>Amidst the intensified crackdown on drug traffickers and peddlers, the Punjab Police, led by Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav, has also initiated a special awareness drive to encourage public cooperation and strengthen the collective resolve to combat this crisis.</p>
<p>Sharing insights on the initiative, Special DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla stated that police commissioners and senior superintendents (CPs/SSPs) have been directed to organize various awareness programs, including SAMPARK meetings and student interactions, to engage the public, youth, NGOs, and clubs in the anti-drug movement.</p>
<p>He highlighted that since the launch of Yudh Nashian Virudh, 3,022 panchayats have pledged their commitment to fighting drug abuse, supporting rehabilitation initiatives, and strengthening police-public partnerships to eradicate drugs from society.</p>
<p>According to the Special DGP, the overwhelming public support has reinforced the Punjab Police&rsquo;s enforcement efforts, leading to intensified raids across the state.</p>
<p>Detailing the latest developments, he revealed that on Thursday alone, 97 drug smugglers were arrested, and significant quantities of narcotics, including 1.5 kg of heroin, 100 grams of opium, 2 kg of ganja, and ₹1.86 lakh in drug money, were seized. In the past 20 days, a total of 2,463 individuals have been arrested, underscoring the ongoing crackdown on drug networks.</p>
<p>Special DGP Arpit Shukla further stated that more than 200 police teams, consisting of over 1,300 personnel and supervised by 84 gazetted officers, conducted raids at 440 locations across Punjab, leading to the registration of 58 FIRs. Additionally, police teams examined 478 suspicious individuals as part of the day-long operation.</p>
<p>He emphasized that the state government has adopted a three-pronged strategy&mdash;Enforcement, De-addiction, and Prevention (EDP)&mdash;to tackle the drug crisis. As part of the de-addiction effort, Punjab Police has convinced seven individuals to seek rehabilitation, while 103 awareness events have been organized to prevent drug abuse.</p>
<p>In a parallel effort, Punjab Police also carried out extensive searches in jails across six districts&mdash;Hoshiarpur, SBS Nagar, Jalandhar Rural, Commissionerate Jalandhar, Kapurthala, and Rupnagar&mdash;to curb illegal activities. &ldquo;Our police teams have thoroughly searched every nook and corner, including barracks, kitchens, and toilets, to ensure strict vigilance inside the jail premises,&rdquo; said Special DGP Arpit Shukla.</p>

<p>In a significant move aimed at enhancing access to quality education for students from economically weaker sections (EWS), the Cabinet has approved an amendment to the Punjab Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Rules, 2011. The amendment omits clause 7 (01) of the existing rules, thereby enabling EWS students to seek direct admission in private schools.</p>
<p>This groundbreaking decision is expected to revolutionize education in Punjab by ensuring that underprivileged students can access high-quality education in private institutions, in addition to the education provided in government schools.</p>
<p>Notably, the Right to Education Act mandates that 25% of seats in private schools be reserved for EWS students. However, previous governments had imposed restrictions in the state&rsquo;s education rules, preventing students from directly availing this benefit in private institutions.</p>
<p>With this historic decision, all such barriers have been removed, ensuring that students from weaker sections have unrestricted access to private school education across Punjab.</p>

<p>In a major breakthrough against the international drug network, the Amritsar Commissionerate Police, acting on the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has dismantled a cross-border drug cartel.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab, Gaurav Yadav, announced on Tuesday that police teams had arrested one accused and seized 8.08 kg of heroin, along with a .30 bore pistol and five cartridges.</p>
<p>The arrested individual has been identified as Dharminder Singh alias Sonu, a resident of Harsha Chhena village in Amritsar. In addition to the narcotics and weapons, law enforcement officials have also seized a Hyundai Creta vehicle used by the accused for transporting drug consignments.</p>
<p>DGP Gaurav Yadav revealed that the accused was in direct contact with cross-border drug traffickers who used drones to smuggle narcotics through the Ajnala sector. He further stated that investigations are ongoing to uncover the entire network, including both backward and forward linkages.</p>
<p>Providing more details about the operation, Amritsar Commissioner of Police (CP) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, during a press conference, explained that police teams, working under the supervision of DCP Investigation Ravinder Pal Singh Sandhu, ADCP Investigation Navjot Singh, and ACP North Kamaljit Singh, successfully apprehended the accused near the Mental Hospital in Amritsar. The arrest was made while Dharminder Singh alias Sonu was waiting to deliver the drug consignment.</p>
<p>The CP further added that police have identified and nominated another accomplice linked to the drug smuggling operation. Investigations are also underway to identify the recipient of the consignment. Authorities are making concerted efforts to dismantle the entire network of suppliers, dealers, and buyers, as well as to determine the total quantity of drugs smuggled by the arrested individuals.</p>
<p>An FIR (No. 20) dated March 17, 2025, has been registered under sections 21(c) and 29 of the NDPS Act, along with sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act, at Majitha Road Police Station in Amritsar.</p>

<p>Through the dedicated efforts of the state government and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora, the Ludhiana Civil Hospital has undergone a remarkable transformation. The modernization project not only improves infrastructure but also reaffirms the government's commitment to delivering high-quality healthcare services. These upgrades reflect a collective vision to raise public health standards and create a patient-friendly environment.</p>
<p>With a strong focus on improving medical facilities and patient care, several critical initiatives have been meticulously planned and implemented. These efforts aim to modernize the hospital, enhance patient comfort, and ensure a clean, safe, and welcoming atmosphere. As part of this transformation, a fully modular Orthopedic Operation Theatre has been established at a cost of nearly ₹1 crore, significantly boosting the hospital&rsquo;s surgical capabilities.</p>
<p>Equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology and advanced surgical tools, this facility enables healthcare professionals to perform complex orthopedic procedures with greater precision and efficiency. Its modular design ensures a sterile and infection-controlled environment, improving patient safety and post-operative outcomes. Additionally, all washrooms in the Outpatient Department (OPD), Emergency Unit, and Inpatient Wards have been upgraded with modern fixtures, anti-slip flooring, and improved drainage systems to uphold the highest standards of cleanliness and hygiene.</p>
<p>To further enhance hospital amenities, 500 new high-quality bed sheets have been provided, and five advanced 80-litre water coolers have been installed at key locations to supply clean and chilled drinking water for patients and visitors. The hospital's interiors have also been revamped, with new tiles laid on sidewalls up to five feet, ensuring better aesthetics and hygiene. Essential repair and maintenance work has been carried out to restore structural integrity, including refurbishing walls and addressing long-standing wear and tear.</p>
<p>To prevent water damage and seepage, all terraces have been waterproofed using advanced materials and techniques. Damaged doors and windows have been repaired, replaced, and repainted. After being non-functional for 12 years, two old lifts have been completely overhauled and put back into service. Non-functional fans and lights have been replaced with energy-efficient models, and the hospital&rsquo;s high-mast lighting systems have been repaired to enhance nighttime visibility and safety.</p>
<p>The hospital premises have also seen major infrastructural improvements. Dilapidated roads within the premises have been dismantled and reconstructed for smoother vehicular movement and pedestrian access. Parking arrangements have been streamlined with the installation of high-quality paver blocks, while a 5,000-square-foot shed has been built to serve as a waiting area for patients and their attendants, providing shelter from adverse weather conditions.</p>

<p>Speaking at an event held at the Indoor Stadium in Ludhiana, Mann, accompanied by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convener Arvind Kejriwal, emphasized that the government&rsquo;s policies are centered around the welfare of the common people. He highlighted that sectors like education, healthcare, and electricity have become key priorities due to AAP&rsquo;s efforts.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Mann also pointed out that previous governments never gave such importance to these core areas, adding that even leaders who once projected themselves as invincible are now wary of AAP&rsquo;s growing influence.</p>
<p>Reflecting on AAP&rsquo;s electoral success, Mann noted that the people of Punjab had given a resounding mandate by electing 92 MLAs during the 2022 Vidhan Sabha elections. He remarked that those who disrespected Sri Guru Granth Sahib and misled the state are now facing consequences. "Those who claimed they would rule for 25 years don&rsquo;t even have 25 leaders with them now, as people have held them accountable for their misdeeds," he said.</p>

<p>Citing the recent case in Narangwal village, where illegal properties linked to drug smugglers were demolished, Mann reiterated the government&rsquo;s zero-tolerance policy against drugs. <p>Sond assured that the Punjab Government has given the police and administration full freedom to act against drug traffickers, ensuring that no trafficker will escape legal action. He emphasized that strict action is being taken without any political interference.</p>
<p>During his visit, the Cabinet Minister was accorded a Guard of Honor at the District Administrative Complex by the Punjab Police.</p>

<p>With the ongoing anti-drug campaign &lsquo;Yudh Nashian Virudh&rsquo;&mdash;launched under the directives of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann&mdash;making a significant impact, intelligence reports indicate that the campaign's success has unsettled Pakistan&rsquo;s ISI.&nbsp;</p>
<p>In response, Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab, Gaurav Yadav, reaffirmed on Monday that Punjab Police will not allow any forces to disrupt the state's hard-earned peace and stability.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Punjab Police will not allow Pak-ISI to destabilise the border state and will ensure exemplary punishment to anyone trying to disturb the peace and harmony of the state,&rdquo; said the DGP, citing the recent neutralisation of the key accused in the Thakur Dwara Mandir attack in Amritsar during a retaliatory police operation.</p>
<p>Addressing the media after a high-level meeting with senior officials&mdash;including Special DGPs, Additional Director Generals of Police (ADGPs), and Inspector Generals of Police (IGPs)&mdash;DGP Yadav highlighted that the decisive crackdown on drugs has forced traffickers to retreat. Many drug couriers are now hesitant to collect consignments dropped by Pakistan-based handlers, leading to a noticeable decline in heroin supply across the border.</p>
<p>&ldquo;The impact of &lsquo;Yudh Nashian Virudh&rsquo; is undeniable. Our intelligence confirms that drug couriers are now hesitant to collect heroin packets dropped by Pakistani smugglers, signalling a major disruption in the supply chain,&rdquo; he stated.</p>
<p>DGP Yadav further elaborated that the campaign strategically targets street-level drug peddlers and smugglers, while ensuring that victims of drug addiction receive necessary treatment at de-addiction centres rather than facing harassment. Senior police officials&mdash;ranging from Special DGPs to DIGs&mdash;are overseeing these operations, ensuring strict action is taken across all districts.</p>
<p>He also praised the cabinet sub-committee's efforts in coordinating various departments to combat the drug menace. Notably, the Punjab government has formed a five-member Cabinet Sub-Committee, led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, to monitor and guide the &lsquo;Yudh Nashian Virudh&rsquo; campaign.</p>
<p>To further strengthen the initiative, DGP Yadav announced the launch of a district-level mapping program to assess the prevalence of different drugs across regions. This data-driven approach will help formulate targeted action plans to effectively combat drug abuse.</p>
<p>Additionally, all field officers&mdash;from Commissioners of Police (CPs) and Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) to Station House Officers (SHOs)&mdash;are being assigned quantifiable targets to ensure a measurable and results-driven approach to the anti-drug campaign.</p>
<p>Providing an update on the campaign&rsquo;s progress, DGP Yadav revealed that in just 17 days since March 1, 2025, Punjab Police has arrested 2,575 drug smugglers and registered 1,651 first information reports (FIRs). The police have seized 95 kg of heroin, 52 kg of opium, 1,129 kg of poppy husk, 13.79 kg of ganja, 7.25 lakh intoxicant tablets/pills/injections, 1 kg of ICE, 1.37 kg of cocaine, and ₹64 lakh in drug money.</p>
<p>He also highlighted the growing success of the newly launched Safe Punjab Anti-Drug Helpline &lsquo;9779100200&rsquo;, which enables citizens to report drug traffickers anonymously. The helpline has seen a significant increase in public participation in recent days.</p>
<p>Expressing gratitude to the people of Punjab for their support in making this campaign successful, DGP Yadav emphasized that public cooperation is essential for achieving long-term success. He noted that Punjab Police has been engaging communities through meetings with local residents and village defense committees to raise awareness and strengthen vigilance.</p>
<p>In addition, he mentioned that initiatives such as YUVA Saanjh and various sports programs are being reinforced to positively channelize the energy of Punjab&rsquo;s youth, steering them away from drugs and towards constructive activities.</p>

<p>Addressing a gathering after unfurling the Tricolour on Republic Day at the local polo ground, Mann said Punjab was the land of gurus, saints, seers and martyrs and had always been a torchbearer for brotherhood and communal harmony.</p>
<p>Maintaining the state&rsquo;s hard-earned peace is the first and foremost priority for the government, Mann said and added no one would be allowed to disturb it.</p>
<p>The chief minister sought support and cooperation of the people to foil any conspiracy to derail peace, progress and prosperity.</p>
<p>He also warned that designs to create communal strife would be nipped in the bud.</p>
<p>The state&rsquo;s social bonding is so strong that any seed can grow on its fertile land but the seed of hatred will never germinate, Mann asserted.</p>
<p>Despite Punjab&rsquo;s limited natural resources, its farmers have put their sweat and toil to make the country self-reliant in food production, he claimed.</p>
<p>In a sombre reminder of the horrors of Parititon, Mann said lakhs of Punjabis died, rendered homeless, and many more lost their lands and properties.</p>
<p>He also alleged that regressive policies of consecutive central governments forced Punjab to suffer for more than seven decades after Independence.</p>
<p>Referring to the ongoing farmers&rsquo; agitation, Mann said the Centre should accept their demands.</p>
<p>It is unfortunate that the hardworking farmers who made the country self-reliant in food production have been forced to agitate on Republic Day as well, Mann said.</p>
<p>Blaming the Centre&rsquo;s &ldquo;apathetic attitude&rdquo;, Mann said the hands that fed the country had to resort to hunger strike to get their demands fulfilled.</p>
<p>The plight of farmers hurts every Indian who believes in constitutional values, he added.</p>
<p>He also demanded that the Centre should stop its &ldquo;step-motherly treatment&rdquo; towards Punjab and its hard working people.</p>
<p>Mann alleged that rural development fund of about Rs 5,500 crore had been withheld by the Centre without assigning any reason, and demanded that the amount be released.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Many times, we have to approach the courts to seek Punjab&rsquo;s right from the Centre,&rdquo; Mann said. &ldquo;But I want to make it clear that Punjabis have never bowed and Punjabis will have their rights.&rdquo; The chief minister said the ethos of the democratic republic had been strengthened with every passing day during the past 75 years as the country&rsquo;s people displayed unflinching faith in democratic norms.</p>
<p>Indians, especially Punjabis, have thwarted every attempt to endanger the country&rsquo;s hard-earned sovereignty, he added.</p>
<p>Apart from safeguarding the country during several wars, brave patriots have made supreme sacrifices to protect the nation&rsquo;s dignity and sovereignty, Mann said.</p>
<p>It is a matter of pride and satisfaction that Punjabis have inherited an indomitable spirit of self-sacrifice and patriotism from Sikh gurus, who &ldquo;taught us to fight against oppression, tyranny and injustice&rdquo;, the chief minister said.</p>
<p>Besides being a land of watershed movements of the Indian freedom struggle, Punjab produced sons-of-the-soil such as Lala Lajpat Rai, Diwan Singh Kalepani and others who laid down their lives to emancipate the country from the clutches of British imperialism, Mann said.</p>
<p>The heroic deeds of Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, Sukhdev Thapar, Udham Singh and Kartar Singh Sarabha gave new vigour to the national freedom struggle by inspiring the younger generations to rise against the British, he added.</p>
<p>Mann said since he assumed charge in March 2022, he had been working closely with the ideals of Bhagat Singh and BR Ambedkar to ensure everyone&rsquo;s wellbeing.</p>
<p>He also touched upon several initiatives taken by the AAP government, including in the fields of health care, education, agriculture and industry, and the steps taken for the welfare of the poor and the common public.</p>
<p>The state dispensation has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption, Mann said and added 50,000 government jobs had been provided to the youth.</p>
<p>Mann said the state government also decided to recruit 10,000 new police personnel, a notification for which had already been issued.</p>

<p>NRI Affairs Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal conducted the fourth online NRI Milnee at Punjab Civil Secretariat-1 to address the grievances of NRI Punjabis through video conferencing.</p>
<p>He stated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Punjab has launched this unique initiative to resolve NRI complaints. He emphasized that Punjab is the only state in the country to implement such a program for the redressal of NRI issues.</p>
<p>During this session, a total of 123 complaints were received&mdash;98 via email and 25 through WhatsApp. Dhaliwal also highlighted that in the last three NRI Milnees, 393 complaints were received, of which 343 cases have already been resolved.</p>
<p>He instructed ADGP NRI Wing of Punjab Police Praveen K Sinha and the SSPs of the concerned districts to promptly address the complaints. Assuring swift resolution, he reiterated that the grievances of NRI Punjabis would be handled with urgency.</p>

<p>As part of this initiative, authorities demolished the properties of two individuals involved in drug trade in Fazilka district on Thursday.</p>
<p>Local residents welcomed this strict action, praising the government&rsquo;s commitment to eliminating the drug menace.</p>
<p>Leading the operation, SSP Varinder Singh Brar stated that the demolition took place in Mandi Arniwala in the presence of the civil administration team. The individuals, identified as Rani and Bagga, were known for their involvement in drug trafficking and had multiple cases registered against them. Their illegal constructions were demolished as part of the ongoing crackdown. Notably, Rani had three drug-related FIRs against her.</p>
<p>SSP Brar emphasized that the War Against Drugs campaign is transforming into a mass movement, with increasing public participation. He noted that people are now coming forward without fear to report drug traffickers, with the police ensuring confidentiality and swift action on every tip-off. He reiterated that those engaged in drug trafficking would face severe consequences.</p>
<p>Providing further details, SSP Brar revealed that since the campaign's launch on March 1, 2025, a total of 76 drug-related cases have been registered across the district. So far, 111 accused have been arrested and sent to jail. The police have seized 2.383 kg of heroin, 575,585 Pregabalin capsules, 23,279 intoxicating tablets, 7.5 kg of poppy husk, and ₹52,000 in drug money.</p>
<p>In addition to this demolition, similar action had been taken earlier against another drug trafficker in the district.</p>

<p>The initiative was inaugurated on Thursday at Government Primary Smart School, Phase-2, SAS Nagar.</p>
<p>As part of the campaign, a specially designed van equipped with banners and loudspeakers was flagged off to spread awareness. A total of 23 such vans will travel across all 228 educational blocks in Punjab, encouraging parents to enroll their children in government schools.</p>
<p>The minister emphasized the department&rsquo;s goal of increasing enrollment in pre-primary schools by 10%. Last year, over 3.51 lakh students were enrolled in Punjab&rsquo;s 13,100 pre-primary schools.</p>
<p>This enrollment drive aims to identify out-of-school children, promote government school admissions, and enhance community engagement for universal access to education. Local MLAs, Deputy Commissioners, SDMs, public figures, School Management Committees (SMCs), panchayats, and school heads will actively participate in the initiative. The objective is to raise awareness among parents and the community about the importance of education and encourage school enrollment.</p>
<p>Highlighting the achievements of the School Education Department, Bains shared that 189 students from government schools successfully cleared the JEE Mains examination this year. <p>He also outlined the efforts of the Punjab Government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, in improving school education and infrastructure over the past three years. Government schools have been equipped with essential amenities, including Wi-Fi, furniture, separate toilets for boys and girls, and transportation facilities for students in Schools of Eminence and 17 girls&rsquo; schools. Additionally, over 10,000 new classrooms have been built, 6,000 classrooms renovated, and 1,300 km of boundary walls constructed in 8,000 government schools.</p>

<p>Raising urgent concerns over the pollution of Punjab's water bodies due to industrial effluents from Himachal Pradesh (HP), Punjab Education Minister and Anandpur Sahib MLA Harjot Singh Bains has written to HP Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, urging swift and stringent action to address this environmental and public health crisis.</p>
<p>Bains has also reached out to the Chairperson of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the Member Secretary of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), seeking immediate intervention to protect public health, particularly in his constituency, Anandpur Sahib.</p>
<p>In his communication, he cited test results from the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), which confirmed that hazardous industrial waste from HP&rsquo;s industrial zones is flowing into the Swan and Barmala Khad, eventually contaminating the Sutlej River. Highlighting the gravity of the situation, he referred to an incident in Barmala Khad, where multiple wild pigs died due to intoxication caused by polluted water. This unchecked contamination is not only deteriorating the Sutlej River but also posing serious health risks to local communities.</p>
<p>In his letter to the Himachal Pradesh CM, Bains referenced PPCB reports and numerous complaints from residents of his constituency, urging personal intervention to stop the discharge of untreated effluents into Punjab's water bodies. He stressed the need for immediate action to curb this environmental hazard.</p>
<p>Expressing deep concerns about preserving ecological balance and ensuring public health in his letter to the NGT Chairperson, Bains called for strict action against industries responsible for pollution. He demanded the immediate closure of those violating pollution norms and urged the NGT to direct HP authorities to implement stringent pollution control measures. Additionally, he requested necessary orders to monitor and remediate the affected water bodies, including the Swan riverbed, Barmala Khad, and the Sutlej River.</p>
<p>In his letter to the CPCB Member Secretary, Bains sought urgent intervention to conduct a thorough inspection of industrial units in the Bathari and Golthai industrial areas of HP. He called for the immediate cessation of untreated industrial discharge into the Swan and Barmala Khad streams and urged strict enforcement of environmental norms, along with punitive action against industries violating pollution regulations. He also emphasized the need for long-term remediation measures to restore water quality in the affected regions.</p>
<p>&ldquo;The rivers are the lifelines of Punjab, and their contamination poses a severe threat to public health, agriculture, and biodiversity," Bains said, stressing the urgency of taking immediate action to prevent further damage.</p>

<p>The 5th Onshore Security Coordination Committee (OSCC) meeting for Punjab took place on Thursday at Hotel Hyatt Regency, Chandigarh, under the chairmanship of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Security SS Srivastava, who represented DGP Punjab Gaurav Yadav.</p>
<p>Senior officials from Punjab Police, including ADGP Internal Security Shive Kumar Verma and ADGP Cybercrime V Neeraja, participated in the meeting, along with OSCC Chairman ED (O&amp;M) GAIL RK Singh and Advisor (Security) GAIL Saurabh Tolumbia. Representatives from the oil and gas sector, Intelligence Bureau, Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and other relevant departments were also present.</p>
<p>During the discussions, representatives from companies such as GAIL, IOCL, HPCL, BPCL, HMEL, Think Gas, and Torrent Gas provided insights into their operations and outlined security challenges affecting their installations.</p>

<p>ADGP Shive Kumar Verma emphasized the necessity of collaboration between oil and gas companies, local police, and the administration, stating that a strong liaison is crucial for effective security and management.</p>
<p>Highlighting the increasing threat of cyber security breaches, ADGP Cyber Crime V Neeraja assured comprehensive support from the Punjab Cyber Crime Division. She proposed deploying specialized teams to assess cybersecurity frameworks and provide recommendations to enhance security at oil and gas installations.</p>
