The Election Commission dismisses allegations of electoral roll manipulation in Maharashtra, citing minimal appeals and adherence to legal procedures.

The Election Commission (EC) has dismissed allegations raised by opposition parties regarding discrepancies in Maharashtra&rsquo;s electoral rolls, calling them unfounded and unsupported by official data.
During the winter session of Parliament, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi demanded a detailed debate on the accuracy of electoral rolls. The Congress and its allies alleged duplication of Elector Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers and claimed that nearly three million new voters had been added in Maharashtra between 2019 and 2024. Similar accusations were echoed by the Trinamool Congress and Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi.
However, EC sources say the allegations are not backed by any formal process. &ldquo;Hardly any first or second appeals were made under Section 24 of the Representation of the People Act, or corrections under Sections 22 and 23 during the Special Summary Revision published on January 6&ndash;7, 2025,&rdquo; the sources said.
The Special Summary Revision (SSR) is conducted before elections to update the rolls by adding new voters, including those who have turned 18 or changed constituencies, and removing deceased or duplicate entries. Despite the presence of over 13.8 million Booth Level Agents (BLAs) nationwide, only 89 appeals were filed in Maharashtra.
&ldquo;With so few appeals, there is no option but to accept the electoral rolls published after the completion of the SSR in January 2025 as undisputed by all,&rdquo; the source added.
The EC also emphasized that Section 24 of the RP Act was introduced in 1961&mdash;&ldquo;much before the current Chief Election Commissioner was even born&rdquo;&mdash;and that the legal process to challenge entries was not followed. &ldquo;If anyone says that Electoral Rolls on which voting has been held is not correct, they have not even cared to follow the election law as proposed by the Government in 1961 and passed by the Parliament in 1961,&rdquo; the source said.
With elections due in Bihar and other states in the coming months, the issue is expected to resurface. Nevertheless, the EC reiterated that the duplication of EPIC numbers does not &ldquo;imply duplicate/fake voters&rdquo; and has released data to support its stance.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday took strong note of an analogy drawn by the Centre in support of the inclusion of non-Muslims in waqf boards and the argument that by that logic, a bench of Hindu judges should not be hearing pleas related to waqf.
The bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna and Justices Sanjay Kumar and K V Viswanathan was questioning the provisions of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 that allow for the nomination of non-Muslim members to the Central Waqf Council and state waqf boards.
"Are you suggesting that minorities, including Muslims, should also be included in boards managing Hindu religious institutions? Please state that openly," the CJI said.
Representing the Centre in the matter, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta defended the provisions, emphasising that the inclusion of non-Muslim members is limited and does not affect the predominantly Muslim composition of these bodies.
The law officer also said objections to non-Muslim participation could logically extend to judicial impartiality and by that logic, the bench itself would be disqualified from hearing the matter.
If the objection to the presence of non-Muslims in the statutory boards is accepted, then the present bench would also not be able to hear the matter, Mehta said, adding, "Then your Lordships cannot hear this matter if we go by that logic."
The CJI shot back, saying "No, sorry Mr Mehta, we are not talking just about adjudication. When we sit here, we lose our religion. We are absolutely secular. For us, one side or the other is the same."

While opposition leaders criticized the Centre for its inaction, Union Home Minister Amit Shah defended the government, citing ongoing peace efforts.

The Rajya Sabha early Friday adopted a Statutory Resolution confirming the imposition of President's Rule in strife-torn Manipur with members across party lines supporting the decision.
Even though opposition members slammed the Centre for its failure to restore law and order in the state and control violence, the government said it was making all efforts to bring normalcy in the state, asserting that its policy was not to impose President's Rule in states.
Speaking at the end of the discussion on the resolution, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said a meeting between the two communities from Manipur is likely to take place in the national capital soon.
Shah informed the House that two meetings between the communities had already taken place in Manipur while the House was in session.
"...We are investing our efforts to bring peace back in Manipur. Thirteen meetings have happened. We brought up the subject late as meetings were going on. The next meeting is in the offing and the issue will see its resolution soon," the minister said.
"The path to communication is open... We don't use this for political mileage," Shah added.
He accused the Congress and other parties of trying to spread misinformation as there was "zero violence" in Manipur.
The minister claimed that on February 11, the Manipur chief minister had resigned and as the news broke, the Congress brought a no-confidence against him even though it did not have the numbers.
"I want to set the record straight. There was no no-confidence motion against the Manipur government. The Congress did not have the required numbers. They were not in a position to bring a no-confidence motion and the chief minister of Manipur had resigned," Shah said.
He said after the resignation of former chief minister N Biren Singh, no other party, including the Congress which has five MLAs, staked claim and President's Rule was imposed.
Though he admitted that 260 lives were lost in Manipur in the ethnic strife, he said the majority of people were killed in the first week of violence.
He said talks were on with both, Meitei and Kuki, communities for a peaceful solution.
Shah also attacked the opposition for "politicising" the violence and said similar incidents took place in the state during the Congress regime, when no prime minister visited the state Seven years ago, he said, a 225-day curfew was imposed in Manipur.
Even in those days of the Congress regime, no prime minister visited Manipur, he claimed.
Referring to his "Communist friends" objection to the prime minister not visiting the state, Shah said, "I don't understand what is the problem. Are they trying to safeguard Naxalism or violence in Manipur." Shah said they should be competent enough to differentiate between ethnic strife in Manipur and the problem of Naxalism.
These problems are not the same, they are different, he asserted.
The home minister accused the TMC of following "dual standards," claiming that 250 lives were lost in the post-poll violence in West Bengal alone and the state took no action in the Sandeshkhali and RG Kar Hospital incidents.
"We are not supporting any gender crime happening in Manipur. We will deal with that. You could not deal with what was happening in West Bengal," he said.
Shah said the northeast has a history of ethnic struggle, but the BJP never "politicised" it.
In 1993, he said, the Naga-Kuki strife broke out and continued till 1998, claiming 750 lives.
But, the then PM did not visit the region, he claimed.
Shah said such struggles take time to cool off and many a time five years have taken for normalcy to return.
Earlier, initiating the discussion on a statutory resolution on the imposition of President's Rule in Manipur, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit strife-torn Manipur at the earliest to restore order.
Kharge said the Modi government failed to govern the northeastern state despite having a majority there. "For nearly two years, Manipur has been burning and the government has totally failed in stopping the violence," he said.
He alleged that the BJP's "double-engine" government promised stability, but instead, delivered "bloodshed, division, and economic collapse" to the state.
"I would urge the prime minister to visit Manipur, meet the affected people resolve their issues and set right the law and order situation there," he said.
The Congress leader also demanded a thorough inquiry into the violence in Manipur and also a white paper tabled in the Parliament on the matter.&nbsp;

The Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 was passed in Parliament after a heated 13-hour debate, with the opposition calling it anti-Muslim and unconstitutional, while the government defended it as a move for transparency and minority welfare.

Parliament early Friday approved the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, after the Rajya Sabha gave its nod to the contentious legislation following an over 13-hour debate.
The discussion witnessed staunch objections from opposition parties, which termed the Bill "anti-Muslim" and "unconstitutional" with the government responding that the "historic reform" would benefit the minority community.
The Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha with 128 members voting in favour and 95 opposing it. It was passed in the Lok Sabha early Thursday, with 288 members supporting it and 232 against it.
Parliament also approved the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, 2025, with the Rajya Sabha approving it. The Lok Sabha has already given its nod to the Bill.
Participating in the discussion, Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju accused the Congress and other opposition parties of scaring the Muslim community with the Bill and asserted that the central government worked for all with the motto of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas'.
Rijiju said the Waqf Board is a statutory body and, as such, like all government bodies, it should be secular. He said the inclusion of a few non-Muslims on the Waqf Board would not alter the decisions of the body and instead would add value.
The minister also claimed that the Bill brought by the government has incorporated several suggestions made by the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) as well as the stakeholders.
The Opposition INDIA bloc parties opposed the Bill, alleging that it was "unconstitutional" and aimed at targeting Muslims. They claimed that the aim of the legislation was to take over the properties of Muslims and hand them to corporations.
Leaders of several opposition parties, including the Congress, the TMC, the DMK, the AAP, the Shiv Sena (UBT), the Samajwadi Party, the RJD, and Left parties, alleged that the Bill was brought by the government with mala fide intentions. Some of them also demanded the withdrawal of the Bill.
Intervening in the discussion, Leader of the House and BJP leader J P Nadda said the Bill is not against Muslims and claimed that it is aimed at helping the poor and protecting the rights of Muslim women.
Nadda accused the Congress of making Muslim women second-grade citizens during its rule at the Centre.
"You made the Indian Muslim ladies second-grade citizens," Nadda said, referring to the Congress party and added, "It was only India where Muslim women were not brought into the mainstream." While triple talaq was banned in Muslim countries such as Egypt, Sudan, Bangladesh, and Syria several years ago, the Congress-led UPA government did nothing for Muslim women while it was in power for a decade.
"We believe in real service, not lip service...I stand in support of the (Waqf) Bill as its sole purpose is to bring reforms in managing the Waqf properties," Nadda said.
Rijiju said the Waqf Board is a statutory body and all government bodies should be secular. Explaining the inclusion of non-Muslims on the Board, he said the number of non-Muslims has been restricted to only four out of 22.
He also accused the Congress and other opposition parties of "pushing Muslims out of the mainstream." For 60 years, he alleged, the Congress and others ruled the country but did not do much for the welfare of Muslims, who continue to remain poor.
Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said the government is trying to sow the seeds of conflict by suppressing Muslims through the Bill and appealed to the ruling party not to disturb peace and harmony in the country.
Kharge, also the Congress president, said the legislation is "unconstitutional" and not good for Indian Muslims. He urged the government to withdraw the Bill which has a lot of "mistakes" and not make it a prestige issue.
He also accused the NDA government of trying to create trouble for Muslims, claiming that the Bill seeks to destroy the community by usurping their properties.
Earlier, initiating the debate, Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain termed the proposed legislation "unconstitutional" and alleged that it targets the Muslim community.
He also accused the BJP of using the proposed legislation to trigger communal tension and polarisation in the society to strengthen its vote bank.
He alleged that the Bill seeks to treat Muslims as "second-class" citizens in the country. Hussain also noted that the BJP-led government was trying to bulldoze the legislation in the Upper House.
Manoj Jha of the RJD said the "content and intent" of the Bill puts a question mark on the government's motives. He also said the government should send the Bill to the select committee of Parliament once again.
Jha alleged the Bill was akin to "dog whistle politics" to keep Muslims away from the mainstream.
Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav emphasised all religions must be treated with respect and the government must prevent India from "shifting towards a totalitarian state." He said India has a huge population of minorities, especially Muslims and if a large section of people feel that injustice has been meted out to them, any efforts to appease them will not work.
John Brittas of the CPI(M) said the Bill was an attack on the Constitution.
"It attacks the basic tenets of India's Constitution, its secularism, democracy, and equality. There is a cardinal violation happening. They have already discriminated against people by segregating them. They are now segregating God from God. Hindu God from Allah," he said.
Y V Subba Reddy of the YSRCP too opposed the Bill, saying it was "unconstitutional".
Congress member Abhishek Singhvi said the Bill has omitted the concept of 'Waqf by user', at least prospectively, by disallowing Waqfs to be created based on uninterrupted usage over a significant period.
"This is a deliberate attempt by the government to further its own agenda by minimising protection conferred upon Waqf properties with the right hand and significantly increase its own control and power to permanently claim these properties with its left hand," Singhvi alleged.
Independent MP Kapil Sibal said non-Muslims could earlier form the Waqf Board too, but this Bill does not allow that anymore. He said there should be reform in the Hindu religion and questioned why only one community was being targeted.
"Bring a law to ensure that women have rights in bequeathing property," he said, urging the government to make a commitment in the House that it would bring a law to maintain the rights of daughters.
While BJD's Muzibulla Khan said Muslims were concerned over the inclusion of non-Muslims on the Waqf Board, party leader Sasmit Patra said the BJD had not issued any whip to its MPs and they were free to vote of their own will.
DMK leader Tiruchi Siva said his party opposes the Bill as it is legally flawed.
"I stand on behalf of my party to oppose this Bill... We reject the Bill in its entirety because it is legally flawed, constitutionally indefensible and morally reprehensible," he stated.
"Why is a certain community being targeted is our question?" Siva asked.
The intention of the government is mala fide and deplorable, and the DMK is certain that the Supreme Court will strike the Bill down, Siva said.
AAP member Sanjay Singh said the Bill is against the tenets of the Indian Constitution, and alleged that the government wants to control Muslim religious bodies through the legislation.
Singh noted that after Muslims, the government will target other religious bodies of the Sikhs, Christians, and Jains and hand them over to their "friends".
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut spoke against the Bill and questioned the government's intent.
"Why is the government so worried about poor Muslims?" Raut said, accusing the NDA of diverting attention from US President Donald Trump's announcement of reciprocal tariffs on India.&nbsp;

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a historic victory in the Delhi Assembly elections on Saturday, reclaiming power in the national capital after 27 years.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) faced a major defeat, with several key leaders, including former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, losing in their strongholds.
This win further strengthens the BJP&rsquo;s hold on national politics, following its recent electoral successes in Maharashtra and Haryana.
The Congress, which had hoped for a revival in Delhi, failed to secure a single seat once again, marking its third consecutive zero tally in the assembly elections. The party had previously ruled Delhi for 15 years, from 1998 to 2013.
BJP won 48 out of 70 seats, while AAP secured 22 seats.

In the New Delhi constituency, BJP&rsquo;s Parvesh Verma defeated Kejriwal by over 4,000 votes. Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit received 4,568 votes. Atishi won from Kalkaji, defeating BJP&rsquo;s Ramesh Bidhuri by over 3,500 votes, while Congress&rsquo;s Alka Lamba secured 4,392 votes.

Among other winners, Gopal Rai secured the Babarpur seat, defeating BJP&rsquo;s Anil Kumar Vashisht by 18,994 votes. Kailash Gahlot, who had switched from AAP to BJP before the elections, won from Bijwasan, defeating AAP&rsquo;s Surender Bhardwaj.
Several BJP leaders also emerged victorious, including Vijender Gupta from Rohini, Kapil Mishra from Karawal Nagar, and Ravinder Singh Negi from Patparganj.

"This is a budget which fulfills the dreams of our people. We have opened many sectors for the youth. Common citizens are going to drive the mission of Viksit Bharat. "Encouraging the private sector in Nuclear Energy is historic. It will ensure a big contribution of Civil Nuclear Energy in the development of the country," he stated. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of preserving India's heritage, pointing out that the country is progressing with the mantra of "development as well as heritage."&nbsp;
He introduced the "Gyan Bharat Mission" for the preservation of one crore manuscripts. "Today the country is moving ahead with the mantra of 'development as well as heritage'. Very important and concrete steps have been taken for this in this budget," he added.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the granting of infrastructure status to the shipbuilding sector, stressing that it would promote domestic production, support self-reliance, create jobs, and boost tourism.&nbsp;
"The designation of infrastructure status will promote the construction of large ships in the country. Additionally, it will accelerate Atma Nirbhar initiatives. Shipbuilding is a sector that provides significant employment opportunities. Furthermore, the country has vast potential for tourism development," PM Modi said.
Furthermore, PM Modi introduced a new scheme providing loans of up to Rs 2 crore without guarantees to SC, ST, and women entrepreneurs.&nbsp;

Shah highlighted the middle class' benefit from the government's decision to exempt income tax for earnings up to Rs 12 lakh. He emphasized that the middle class has always been a priority for PM Modi.&nbsp;
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the 2025 Budget in Parliament. Earlier, Shah described the 2025 Budget as the blueprint for the Modi government's vision of building a developed and best India across all sectors.

The Supreme Court has asked the Centre to file its response within a week on challenges to the Waqf Amendment Act 2025, while ensuring no waqf properties are denotified and no new appointments are made to the Waqf Council until the next hearing.

The Supreme Court on Thursday took note of the Centre&rsquo;s request for a week's time to submit its preliminary response in the case concerning the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.
Representing the Centre, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured the bench that a reply, along with necessary documents, would be filed within seven days.
The court recorded the Centre&rsquo;s assurance that no appointments would be made to the Waqf Board or the Central Waqf Council until the matter is further heard. It also acknowledged Mehta&rsquo;s submission that properties registered or declared under the Waqf category, including &ldquo;waqf by deed&rdquo; and &ldquo;waqf by user,&rdquo; would not be de-notified in the meantime.
Mehta emphasized the legislative nature of the Waqf Act, stating: "The Waqf Act is a considered piece of legislation." He added that the Centre had received numerous representations regarding land classifications as Waqf. Arguing against a blanket stay on the Act, Mehta warned: "Staying the entire Act would be a severe step," and requested time to respond fully.
While noting previous positive observations about parts of the legislation, the court clarified it was not inclined to stay the Act in its entirety. It stressed the importance of maintaining the status quo during the judicial review. "We do not want the current status to be altered while the matter is under consideration," the bench reiterated.
On Wednesday, after a lengthy two-hour hearing, the court hinted at possibly suspending certain key provisions. These included the participation of non-Muslims in Waqf Boards, the role of Collectors in property disputes, and provisions for de-notifying court-declared Waqf properties. Before issuing any interim order, the court decided to hear all parties defending the Act.
The case is being heard by a three-judge bench consisting of Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, and Justices PV Sanjay Kumar and KV Viswanathan. During arguments, the bench observed: "We will say that whichever properties have been declared by the court to be Waqf or held to be Waqf will not be de-notified as Waqfs or be treated as non-Waqf properties, whether they are by Waqf-by-user or waqf-by-declaration or otherwise... declared by courts or otherwise also."
The Chief Justice further elaborated: "Second, Collector can continue with proceedings, but the proviso will not be given effect to. If he wants, he can move an application before this court, and we can modify it. Third, as far as the constitution of the Board and Council is concerned, ex officio members can be appointed, regardless of their faith, but the other members should be Muslims."
Commenting on the amended law's provision for de-notifying longstanding Waqf properties, the CJI stated: "Government cannot rewrite history." On including non-Muslims in Waqf institutions, Justice Viswanathan remarked: "Whenever it comes to Hindu endowments, it would be Hindus who would be governing."
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing one of the petitioners, voiced concern over the authority given to Collectors: "This is per se unconstitutional. This also says that property will not be a Waqf till the officer decides so." Referring to changes in council composition, he added: "Only Muslims had been part of the Waqf council and Boards, but now, after the amendment, even Hindus can be a part of it." Sibal strongly argued: "It is a parliamentary usurpation of the faith of 200 million persons."
Towards the end of the hearing, the bench also addressed reports of violence in West Bengal's Murshidabad district, allegedly linked to the new law. "The one thing is very disturbing&mdash;the violence that is taking place. The issue is before the court and we will decide," the bench stated.
Multiple petitions have been filed before the Supreme Court, challenging the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. Critics argue the legislation discriminates against Muslims and infringes upon their fundamental rights. The bill received presidential assent on April 5 after intense parliamentary debate.
Opposition to the law has come from several political figures and groups, including AIMIM&rsquo;s Asaduddin Owaisi, Congress MPs Mohammad Jawed and Imran Pratapgarhi, AAP&rsquo;s Amanatullah Khan, and members from parties like DMK, CPI, SP, RJD, and others. Religious and civil bodies such as the Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind, AIMPLB, and various Sunni groups have also filed challenges.
On the other hand, BJP-ruled states and other groups&mdash;including Adivasi and Hindu organizations&mdash;have filed impleadment applications defending the law. Two PILs have also been submitted, questioning parts of the 1995 and 2025 Acts and urging for equal protections for other communities.

Voicing concern over a recent Supreme Court ruling prescribing a timeline for the President to decide on bills, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Friday said India had not bargained for a democracy where judges will legislate, perform Executive functions and act as a "super Parliament".
Last week, the Supreme Court had, for the first time prescribed that the President should decide on the bills reserved for her consideration by the governor within three months from the date such reference is received.
"There is a directive to the President by a recent judgement. Where are we heading? What is happening in the country? We have to be extremely sensitive. It is not a question of someone filing a review or not. We never bargained for democracy for this day. President being called upon to decide in a time-bound manner, and if not, becomes law," Dhankhar said.
Addressing a group of Rajya Sabha interns, he said, "So we have judges who will legislate, who will perform executive functions, who will act as super Parliament, and absolutely have no accountability because law of the land does not apply to them".
Dhankhar said his worries were at a "very highest level" and he had never thought in "my life" that he will have the occasion to see it.
He reminded the audience that the President of India is a very elevated position. President takes oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution.
Others, including ministers, the vice president, parliamentarians and judges take oath to abide by the Constitution.
"We cannot have a situation where you direct the President of India and on what basis? The only right you have under the Constitution is to interpret the Constitution under Article 145(3). There it has to be five judges or more ...," he said.&nbsp;

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw witnessed the breakthrough of India's longest rail tunnel at Janasu in Uttarakhand on Wednesday.
Accompanied by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Vaishnaw went about 3.5 km inside the tunnel when a boring machine achieved the breakthrough from the other side breaking last layer of rock.
The 14.57-km-long tunnel no 8 between Devprayag and Janasu is part of the ambitious 125-km Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Broad Gauge Rail Link Project in Uttarakhand.
Vaishnaw called it a historic moment as the breakthrough coincided with the day rail service was started in India on April 16, 1853.
Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Railways, which is looking after the whole project, achieved this breakthrough using a German-made tunnel boring machine (TBM) named 'Shakti'.
Since Tunnel 8 is a twin tunnel, the work on another parallel one is going on with the help of the second TBM and it is expected to achieve breakthrough by July. The work contractor for this tunnel is L&amp;T.
"The remarkable feat was achieved in the presence of Hon'ble Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who visited the site to mark this momentous milestone in Himalayan rail connectivity," a statement from RVNL said.
Earlier, RVNL CMD Pradeep Gaur had told PTI that this is the first time TBM technology has been deployed for rail tunnelling in mountainous regions of the country, and the progress sets a new global benchmark with a 9.11-m diameter single-shield rock TBM.
Gaur has mentioned that the 9.69-m diameter Cabrera tunnel in Spain was built by a double shield TBM at an average rate of 423 m per month while the 14.58-km tunnel between Devprayag and Janasu has just been completed by Single Shield TBM at an average rate of 413 metres per month, becoming the second fastest in the world.
"This breakthrough marks a significant step in the government's mission to enhance connectivity across India's hill states," Gaur said after the event.
"The Rishikesh-Karnaprayag project, executed from concept to commissioning by RVNL, aims to transform regional connectivity by linking key towns such as Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Gauchar, and Karnaprayag across five Himalayan districts," the RVNL statement said.
"More than 83% of the 125-km alignment passes through tunnels, involving over 213 km of tunnelling across main and escape routes," it added.
Officials present at the tunnel site stated that the TBM has faced extraordinary logistical and geological challenges, including transporting 165 MT components from Mundra port to site across narrow Himalayan roads and old bridges.
The tunnel also lies in tectonically active Seismic Zone IV, requiring sophisticated design and continuous advance geological probing, they added.
RVNL is of the view that once completed, the project will drastically reduce travel time, improve all-weather access to remote regions, and boost tourism and economic development across Uttarakhand.
"It is also a critical step in realizing the Char Dham rail connectivity initiative," the statement said.&nbsp;

Additionally, CM Yogi launched a major grain-based distillery plant at the Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority (GIDA), a project valued at ₹1,200 crore. Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister said, &ldquo;This is not just a Distillery but an ethanol plant.&rdquo;
&ldquo;In the first phase, it will produce 350,000 litres of ethanol daily, with plans to increase production to 500,000 litres later on,&rdquo; he added.
Highlighting the shift in industrial momentum in the region, the Chief Minister credited the surge in investment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi&rsquo;s ethanol policy. &ldquo;Ethanol production has increased from 42 lakh litres to 177 crore litres since Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the production of ethanol from surplus sugarcane,&rdquo; he stated.
He also emphasized Gorakhpur&rsquo;s rapid industrial growth under the current administration. &ldquo;Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority (GIDA) has attracted over ₹15,000 crore in investments, reversing a previous lack of interest in industrial setup,&rdquo; CM Yogi remarked.

Addressing a press conference here, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and her Punjab counterpart, Bhagwant Mann, said they have written to the EC demanding "fair grounds" to the AAP in the February 5 Delhi Assembly polls and the restoration of Kejriwal's security cover given by the Punjab Police, along with an audit of "life-threatening" attacks on him.
They alleged that the Delhi Police, which comes under the Centre, has turned a blind eye on the alleged attacks on Kejriwal in accordance with Union Home Minister Amit Shah's order.
"There are two players involved in this conspiracy to kill Kejriwalji -- the BJP and the Delhi Police. They are both conspiring to end Kejriwal's life. Attacks have been attempted on him one after the other. In October (last year), an attack was made on Kejriwal. Upon investigation by us, it was found that the attackers were BJP workers, but police took no action," Atishi alleged.
"We have written to the EC demanding that Kejriwal's security be restored. We do not trust the Delhi Police as it is under Amit Shah's control," she added.
The AAP leaders alleged that resorting to "dirty politics" ahead of the Delhi polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has conspired to get Kejriwal's security removed.

These officers allegedly met with volunteers such as Vijeta, Rekha Bassi, and Deepa Deol, dictated false statements to them, and then pressured them to sign," the letter said.
The Chief Minister also highlighted that her volunteers were willing to give statements in the presence of their legal representatives, but they were being forced to sign incomplete and false documents.&nbsp;
When the volunteers refused, the police allegedly tore up their objections. Atishi expressed concerns over the collusion of the local police officers and called for their immediate transfer, specifically requesting that SHO Dharamveer, Inspector Sushil Sharma, and Constable Jai Bhagwan be reassigned out of the area.
Earlier this week, Atishi had also called for the deployment of paramilitary forces in Kalkaji to ensure the safety of voters and party workers as the Delhi Assembly elections draw near. The elections are set for February 5, with the vote counting scheduled for February 8, amid escalating tensions between the AAP and BJP.

Taking a swipe at the BJP-led Central government, Singh stated that the book contained everything about the unfulfilled promises made by BJP, including commitments on providing permanent housing, doubling minimum support prices (MSPs) for farmers, strengthening the rupee, and ensuring border security.
&ldquo;Modi ji had made many promises after becoming the Prime Minister. He had said that by 15th August 2022, everyone will get a permanent house, farmers will get MSP, the rupee will be strengthened, the border will be protected... In his petition, Singh has argued that his extended absence is preventing the voice of his 19 lakh constituents from being heard in Parliament. He has also claimed that his detention is politically motivated, designed to stifle his growing popularity.&nbsp;
Singh's detention order was first issued in March 2023 by the Deputy Magistrate of Amritsar and has since been extended on multiple occasions. In an interview with ANI, he stated, "Now when the imposition of NSA on him comes to an end, they already imposed UAPA. Now when we are planning to launch a political party, it is a conspiracy to stop us. Bhagwant Mann's anti-Sikh mindset is being exposed. Portfolios have been assigned to the seven new ministers who took oath on Wednesday in Bihar, as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar reshuffled his Cabinet in preparation for the upcoming Assembly elections.
Health Minister Mangal Pandey has been given additional charge of the Law Department, while Information Technology has been reassigned from Santosh Suman, the son of HAM(S) chief Jitan Ram Manjhi.
Krishna Kumar Mantoo of the BJP will now head the Information Technology Department, while Suman will continue handling Minor Water Resources.
Vijay Mandal, an MLA from Sikti, has been given the Disaster Management Department, whereas Sanjay Saraogi (Darbhanga) has been entrusted with the Revenue and Land Reforms Department. The Land and Revenue Department was previously under state BJP chief Dilip Kumar Jaiswal, who stepped down in adherence to the party&rsquo;s 'one person, one post' policy.
Additionally, Biharsharif MLA Sunil Singh has been appointed as the Forest, Environment, and Climate Change Minister. Sahebganj MLA Raju Singh will oversee the Tourism Department, while Motilal Prasad has been given charge of the Arts and Culture Department.
With this Cabinet expansion, the total number of ministers has reached 36, the maximum limit allowed in Bihar.
All seven newly inducted ministers belong to the BJP, increasing the party&rsquo;s total ministerial strength to 21 in the state. Nitish Kumar&rsquo;s JD(U) has 13 ministers, while Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) has one, along with one independent minister.
The ministers come from regions where the BJP holds a strong political presence, with six out of the seven being from North Bihar. The BJP has also maintained a caste balance in its selections.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a sharp attack on the ruling DMK government in Tamil Nadu, accusing its leaders of corruption and poor governance.&nbsp;
Speaking at the inauguration of BJP district offices in Coimbatore, Tiruvannamalai, and Ramanathapuram, Shah alleged that DMK leaders were involved in various scams.
"In cases of corruption, all the leaders of the DMK hold a master's degree. One of their leaders is embroiled in a cash-for-jobs case, another is involved in money laundering and illegal sand mining, and a third is facing charges related to disproportionate assets," Shah stated.

Dismissing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin's claim that the state was denied central funds, Shah countered, "There is no truth in MK Stalin's statement. The Modi government has given Rs 5 lakh crore to Tamil Nadu in the last five years."&nbsp;
He further said that a comparison between funds allocated under the UPA and NDA governments proves that Tamil Nadu faced actual injustice during the UPA regime.
Taking a dig at DMK, Shah remarked, "Sometimes it feels as if DMK has let all the corrupts in the society join DMK through a membership drive. MK Stalin and his son are raising several issues to deviate from real concerns. Today, they are going to have a meeting regarding delimitation. PM Modi has made it clear that even after delimitation, the seats of none of the states in the South will be decreased."
Shah also declared that the BJP will form a government in Tamil Nadu in 2026 under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). He pledged to end corruption, nepotism, and anti-India activities in the state.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is set to expand his cabinet on Wednesday, ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections.&nbsp;
The expansion, scheduled for 4 PM, will see the induction of new ministers from his party, Janata Dal (United), as well as ally Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), according to ANI. Four MLAs are expected to take ministerial oaths, including two from JD(U).
In a significant development, Bihar Revenue Minister and BJP state president Dilip Jaiswal has announced his resignation, aligning with the party's "One Person, One Post" policy.&nbsp;
Expressing gratitude for his role, Jaiswal stated, "I am going to resign from the post of Revenue Minister. 'One person, one post' is the principle on which the party works. I am thankful that the central leadership has given me the responsibility of the party's state unit."&nbsp;
Jaiswal, who was appointed BJP's Bihar state president on January 18, hinted at further cabinet reshuffling following his resignation, with the expansion set to take place before the elections later this year.
Commenting on the upcoming cabinet expansion, Jaiswal remarked, "It is the prerogative of the Chief Minister."&nbsp;
Meanwhile, Nitish Kumar&rsquo;s son, Nishant Kumar, has urged voters to support his father in the upcoming elections, emphasizing his contributions to Bihar's development.&nbsp;
"I urge the people of Bihar to vote for Bihar CM Nitish Kumar as he has done a lot of development in the state. Last time, people gave 43 seats. The public should ensure that we win more seats in the elections so that we can continue the pace of development," Nishant Kumar said.&nbsp;
He also encouraged JD(U) workers to promote Nitish Kumar&rsquo;s achievements from the past 19 years among the people of Bihar.

The cause of the fire is reported to be a short circuit in an electric transformer installed on the ground floor of the five-storey hostel building.

A massive fire broke out on Sunday morning in a boys' hostel building injuring eight students here with preliminary reports suggesting that the short circuit led to the blaze, police said.
The incident happened at around 6.15 am in Landmark City under Kunhari police station, Superintendent of Police (SP) Kota City Amrita Duhan said.
According to an initial investigation, a short circuit in an electric transformer installed on the ground floor of the five-storey hostel building led to the fire, the police said. The forensic team, however, is trying to ascertain the exact reason for the incident.
Rakesh Vyas, a fire officer at Kota Municipal Corporation, said the hostel building was not equipped with fire safety measures and did not have a fire NOC. He added that it was alarming that the transformer was installed inside the hostel building.
The police said the six injured students, including one who sustained severe burns, are receiving primary medical treatment at Maharao Bheem Singh (MBS) Hospital here.
One student, who suffered a fracture in his leg after he along with 14 others jumped from the building's first floor to escape the fire, is being treated at a private hospital, they added.
Bhavishya, a NEET aspirant from Bihar's Chindwara who lived in the building, was also injured in the incident. He said he was woken up by a loud noise at around 6.15 am and when he came out of his room, he found thick smoke everywhere.
He said the students decided to jump from the first floor as the staircase was filled with smoke and there was no other way out of the building.
The building had 75 rooms of which 61 were occupied, SP Duhan said.
She added that fire tenders rushed to the spot in time and doused the fire before it could spread to the upper floors.
All the students have been rescued from the building, circle inspector at Kunhari police station Arvind Bhardwaj said.
The parents of the students are being contacted to assure them that their wards are safe, he added.
Bhardwaj said that as most students couldn't carry their mobile phones while they were being rescued, a helpdesk is also being set up for the students and their parents.
The matter is being investigated, the CI said.&nbsp;

The CBI has created a dedicated e-mail ID -- sandeshkhali@cbi.gov.in -- on which victims of land grab in Sandeshkhali, a village in West Bengal, can get their complaints lodged, officials said on Thursday.
The agency has created the e-mail ID in compliance with the orders of the Calcutta High Court passed on Wednesday.
"The District Magistrate, North 24 Parganas has also been requested to give adequate publicity of the said e-mail ID in the locality and also issue a public notice in the vernacular dailies having a wide circulation in the areas as per the Hon'ble High Court's order," a CBI spokesperson said in a statement.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will start registering cases on the basis of the complaints received by it, sources said.
The high court on Wednesday ordered a court-monitored CBI probe into allegations of crimes against women and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali, saying an "impartial inquiry" is required in the interest of justice and fair play.
The court also directed the CBI to file a comprehensive report on the alleged illegal conversion of agricultural land into water bodies for pisciculture, after conducting a thorough inspection of the revenue records and a physical inspection of the land alleged to have been converted.
The court asked the central agency to submit a comprehensive report to it on the next date of hearing on May 2.
The state government was directed to provide the required support to the CBI.
The agency is already probing three cases related to attacks on Enforcement Directorate officials at Sandeshkhali allegedly by a mob instigated by Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shahjahan Sheikh.

West Bengal Police on Tuesday issued summons to the NIA officer who was injured in the alleged attack during the central probe agency's raid in Purba Medinipur district last week, to appear before the investigating officer of the Bhupatinagar police station on April 11, an official said.
The Bhupatinagar police station investigating officer has also asked the NIA to bring the vehicle which was damaged allegedly during the attack on Saturday, stating that they want to conduct a forensic test of it, he said.
The police officer has also summoned three villagers from Bhupatinagar for questioning in connection to the attack on NIA officers when they went to arrest the two main conspirators in connection with a blast that took place in 2022 at Bhupatinagar in Purba Medinipur district in which three persons were killed.
"The NIA officer has been asked to appear before our officer on April 11. We have also asked them to send the vehicle which was damaged during the attack. We plan to conduct a forensic test on it," he told PTI.
The villagers have been asked to appear in two to three days, the officer said.
A team of the NIA was allegedly attacked by a mob on Saturday when it went to arrest two main suspects in the 2022 blast case in West Bengal's Purba Medinipur district, sparking a political slugfest with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accusing the investigators of assaulting villagers.
One NIA officer was injured and a vehicle was damaged in the attack on Saturday.
The attack on the NIA team happened around three months after villagers and locals assaulted a team of Enforcement Department (ED) officers when they went to raid the residence of, now arrested TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh on January 5 in connection with the alleged ration scam.

She knows the accused. We took her to the hospital and rushed towards the boy&rsquo;s house and handed him over to the police,&rdquo; the father said in the FIR.&nbsp;
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sukanya Sharma told The Indian Express that a case has been registered. &nbsp; &nbsp; &ldquo;The girl&rsquo;s condition is not stable. The accused is at the police station, and he will be produced before the juvenile court. The medical examination of the victim has confirmed rape. The boy has been booked under various sections including under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. He will be sent to a juvenile home after being produced in court,&rdquo; Sharma said.&nbsp; Police have also deployed adequate force in the area, as the accused and victim belonged to different communities. &nbsp;
