US authorities arrested 538 migrants and deported hundreds in a mass operation just days into President Donald Trump's second administration, his press secretary said late Thursday.
"The Trump Administration arrested 538 illegal immigrant criminals," Karoline Leavitt said in a post on social platform X, adding "hundreds" were deported by military aircraft.
"The largest massive deportation operation in history is well underway. Promises made. Promises kept," she said.
Trump promised a crackdown on illegal immigration during the election campaign and began his second term with a flurry of executive actions aimed at overhauling entry to the United States.
On Thursday Newark city mayor Ras J. Baraka said in a statement that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents "raided a local establishment... detaining undocumented residents as well as citizens, without producing a warrant".
The mayor said one of those detained during the raid was a US military veteran, "this egregious act is in plain violation" of the US Constitution.
An ICE post on X said: "Enforcement update ... 538 arrests, 373 detainers lodged".
New Jersey Democratic Senators Cory Booker and Andy Kim said they were "deeply concerned" about the Newark raid by immigration agents.
"Actions like this one sow fear in all of our communities &mdash; and our broken immigration system requires solutions, not fear tactics," they said in a joint statement.
Trump has vowed to carry out "the largest deportation operation in American history," impacting an estimated 11 million undocumented migrants in the United States.
On his first day in office he signed orders declaring a "national emergency" at the southern border and announced the deployment of more troops to the area while vowing to deport "criminal aliens."
His administration said it would also reinstate a "Remain in Mexico" policy that prevailed during Trump's first presidency, under which people who apply to enter the United States from Mexico must remain there until their application has been decided.
The White House has also halted an asylum program for people fleeing authoritarian regimes in Central and South America, leaving thousands of people stranded on the Mexican side of the border.
Earlier in the week the Republican-led US Congress green-lit a bill to expand pretrial incarceration for foreign criminal suspects.

Intense rainfall in a mountainous area near Pekalongan city in Central Java province sparked the landslide on Monday, collapsing bridges and burying cars and houses.
Search and rescue agency Basarnas said in a statement Wednesday that the toll remained unchanged from Tuesday at 17 dead, nine missing and 13 people injured.
But another body was found, Mohammad Yulian Akbar, a local official told AFP later Wednesday, giving a higher toll of 18.
Heavy machinery was deployed to clear road access for search teams and around 200 rescue personnel have been sent to help, Akbar said.
"The focus is to search for the victims," he said, adding that the local government had declared an emergency in the district for two weeks.
The worst hit area was Kasimpar village according to the local official, where the landslide struck a coffee shop and people who were trying to shelter from the rain.
Police, soldiers and volunteers have joined the search alongside rescue workers, which is taking place around 90 kilometres (60 miles) west of the city of Semarang.
But efforts were intermittently suspended Tuesday as heavy rain continued to pound the area.
The weather forecast for the next three days suggests moderate rain that could "cause floods, flash floods and landslides", warned Abdul Muhari, a spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), on Tuesday.
Indonesia is prone to landslides during the rainy season, typically between November and April.
In November, flooding triggered by intense rains in western Indonesia killed 27 people.
But some disasters caused by adverse weather have taken place outside that season in recent years. Climate change has also increased the intensity of storms, leading to heavier rains, flash floods and stronger gusts.
In May, at least 67 people died after heavy rains caused flash floods in West Sumatra, pushing a mixture of ash, sand, and pebbles from the eruption of Mount Marapi into residential areas.

Bangladesh police on Thursday said that a former beauty queen has been detained for setting up a honey trap for a former Saudi ambassador in Dhaka in an attempt to extort USD 5 million, an allegation rejected by the woman who claimed that the diplomat wanted to marry her.
"Meghna Alam, her close associate Dewan Samir and two to three others were involved in luring foreign ambassadors into love affairs with beautiful girls," police said in a petition filed before a Dhaka court seeking her to be shown arrested in an extortion case in the interest of fair investigation.
Police, however, did not name the Saudi diplomat or any other envoy but said she was detained for "disrupting state security" and "prejudicing the country's financial interests".
The 30-year-old model and former "Miss Earth", Alam, who runs a charity as well, was initially detained without charge under the controversial Special Powers Act that allows police to detain a suspect for several months.
Her arrest, however, sparked a media outcry and concerns by rights watchdogs. Law Adviser of the interim government, Asif Nazrul, said that due process was not followed when police took her into custody on April 9.
"We call on the authorities to either charge Meghna with an internationally recognizable crime or release her," Amnesty International last week said in a statement.
Police spokesman Muhammad Talebur Rahman said the court granted the petition ordering her to be sent to prison. She was accused of a primary charge of alleged extortion attempt through blackmail.
The Bengali language newspaper Prothom Alo and other media outlets reported that Alam told the court that she was contacted by the diplomat, who had asked her to commence a relationship.
Public prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi told reporters that Alam claimed in the court that the Saudi diplomat had proposed they be locked in nuptial cord and frequently called and messaged her while she never initiated the contact.
Some two million Bangladeshi expatriate workers, the highest in a single country, work in Saudi Arabia - a major source of the South Asian nation's remittance earnings. Interim government Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus does not want to jeopardise diplomatic ties.
Alam appeared without legal counsel during the court hearing on Thursday and defended herself on her own, urging her arrest to be nullified.
Her father, Badrul Alam, earlier told reporters that the ambassador wanted to marry her, but she refused the proposal as he already had a wife and children.
The Saudi embassy in Dhaka did not make any comment, but media reports suggested the envoy left Bangladesh as the scandal was unfolded in public.

The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) training aircraft Mirage V ROSE crashed in the fields of Ratta Tibba in the suburbs of Vehari district, some 350 kms southwest of Lahore, on Tuesday.
The two pilots remained unhurt as they managed to eject themselves, the official said. However, local media said the duo was shifted to an army hospital nearby.
&ldquo;The aircraft took off from Thingi airport near Vehari city on a routine training flight but soon after it crashed near an oil depot. However, there was neither any casualty nor any damage to any building,&rdquo; the official said.
Eyewitnesses said they heard a loud explosion followed by a plume of smoke in the field. Rescue 1122, military and police personnel and rescuers reached the spot.
Dawn reported that both pilots suffered minor injuries and they were shifted to hospital in an army helicopter. &ldquo;The PAF aircraft was on a training flight but crashed due to some technical fault,&rdquo; it said.

Donald Trump and Giorgia Meloni hit an optimistic note about a possible US-EU tariffs deal Thursday as the far-right Italian prime minister mounted a charm offensive at the White House.
Casting herself as the only European who can de-escalate Trump's trade war, Meloni highlighted their conservative common ground and said she wanted to "make the West great again."
"There will be a trade deal, 100 percent," Trump said during her visit. Meloni said she was "sure" they could reach a deal.
The two leaders struck a warm tone during a working lunch and a meeting in the Oval Office, with Trump hailing the 48-year-old Italian premier as "fantastic."
Meloni is the first leader from Europe to visit the Republican since he slapped 20 percent tariffs on EU exports, which he has since suspended for 90 days.
The Italian leader said Trump had accepted an invitation to visit Rome in the "near future" and that he might also meet European leaders there.
"Even if we have some problems between the two shores of the Atlantic, it is the time that we try to sit down and find solutions," she said.
Meloni highlighted their shared views on immigration and "woke" ideology and added: "The goal for me is to make the West great again, and I think we can do it together."
 - 'Get smart' -
But while Trump expressed confidence about an eventual deal with the 27-nation bloc he accuses of trying to "screw" the United States, he said he was in "no rush."
"Everybody wants to make a deal -- and if they don't want to make a deal, we'll make the deal for them," Trump added.
Trump also returned to his administration's familiar criticisms of Europe, saying it needed to "get smart" on immigration and boost defense spending on NATO.
The US leader said separately that superpower rival China had "reached out" about a possible deal to end the bitter trade war between the world's biggest economies.
Trump has slapped eye-watering 145 percent tariffs on Chinese goods after it retaliated to his worldwide "Liberation Day" tariffs announcement on April 2.
"I think we're going to make a very good deal with China," he added.
Russia's war in Ukraine meanwhile remained a touchy subject between the US and Italian leaders.
Meloni has been a staunch ally of Ukraine and President Volodymyr Zelensky since Russia's invasion of the country in 2022, most recently calling Moscow's Palm Sunday attack on the city of Sumy "horrible and vile."
Trump however has stunned allies with a pivot toward Moscow and repeated attacks on Zelensky, whom he berated in an Oval Office meeting in February.
The US leader said with Meloni beside him that "I don't hold Zelensky responsible but I'm not exactly thrilled with the fact that that war started," adding that he was "not a big fan" of the Ukrainian.
 - Uncertainty -
Meloni had earlier acknowledged the uncertainty weighing on her trip as Europe reels from repeated blows from a country that has been the continent's defender for decades.
"I am aware of what I represent and I am aware of what I am defending," Meloni said Tuesday.
Italian newspapers reported that one of the goals of Meloni's visit was to pave the way for a meeting between Trump and EU chief Ursula von der Leyen.
Meloni's decision to personally intercede with Trump has caused some disquiet among EU allies, who are concerned that her visit could undermine bloc unity.
"If we start having bilateral discussions, obviously it will break the current dynamic," France's Industry Minister Marc Ferracci warned last week.
A European Commission spokeswoman said that while the EU alone could negotiate trade agreements, Meloni's "outreach is very welcome" and was coordinated with Brussels.
Following Thursday's meeting with Trump, Meloni will fly back to Rome on Friday in time to host US Vice President JD Vance, with whom she has a meeting planned.
Trump's threatened tariffs could have a major impact on Italy, the world's fourth-largest exporter, which sends around 10 percent of its exports to the United States.

Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana allegedly said the Indians &ldquo;deserved it" and commended the nine LeT terrorists killed during the attack, suggesting that they should be given "Nishan-e-Haider&rdquo;, Pakistan&rsquo;s highest gallantry award, according to the US Department of Justice.
The US on Wednesday extradited Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a Canadian citizen and native of Pakistan, to stand trial in India on 10 criminal charges stemming from his alleged role in the 2008 terrorist attack in Mumbai that killed 166 people, including six Americans.
"Rana&rsquo;s extradition is a critical step toward seeking justice for the six Americans and scores of other victims who were killed in the heinous attacks," the Department of Justice said in a statement.
India alleges that Rana facilitated a fraudulent cover so that his childhood friend Headley, a US citizen born Daood Gilani, could freely travel to Mumbai to conduct surveillance of potential attack sites for Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
After the attack, Rana allegedly told Headley, one of the main conspirators of the assault, that the Indians &ldquo;deserved it", the statement said.
"In an intercepted conversation with Headley, Rana allegedly commended the nine LeT terrorists who had been killed committing the attacks, saying that &ldquo;they should be given Nishan-e-Haider&rdquo;-Pakistan&rsquo;s highest award for gallantry in battle, which is reserved for fallen soldiers," the statement said.
India alleges that Headley received training from LeT members in Pakistan and was in direct communication with the terrorist outfit about plans to attack Mumbai.
Rana agreed to open a Mumbai branch of his immigration business and appoint Headley as the manager of the office, despite the latter having no immigration experience, it said.
On two separate occasions, Rana allegedly helped Headley prepare and submit visa applications to Indian authorities that contained information the former knew to be false. Rana also supplied, through his unsuspecting business partner, documentation in support of Headley&rsquo;s attempt to secure formal approval from Indian authorities to open a branch office of his immigration business.
"Over more than two years, Headley repeatedly met Rana in Chicago and described his surveillance activities on behalf of LeT, LeT&rsquo;s responses to Headley&rsquo;s activities, and LeT&rsquo;s potential plans for attacking Mumbai," the statement said.
Between November 26 and 29, 2008, ten LeT terrorists carried out a series of 12 coordinated shooting and bombing attacks in Mumbai.
LeT terrorists infiltrated the city by sea, dispersing to multiple locations in teams. They attacked a train station, two restaurants, the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel and a Jewish community centre.
Hundreds of people were injured in the attack and Mumbai sustained more than USD 1.5 billion in property damage.
"The attacks were among the most horrific and catastrophic in India&rsquo;s history," the statement said.
The US statement also noted that India&rsquo;s pending proceedings against Rana are not the first proceedings in which he has been accused of conspiring to commit violent acts of terrorism.
In 2013, Rana was sentenced to 14 years in prison following his trial conviction in the Northern District of Illinois for conspiring to provide material support to LeT and to a foiled LeT-sponsored terrorist plot in Copenhagen, Denmark.
As part of those same criminal proceedings, Headley pleaded guilty to 12 federal terrorism charges, including aiding and abetting the murders of the six Americans in Mumbai and later planning to attack a Danish newspaper, and was sentenced to 35 years in prison, the statement said.
In June 2020, the United States acted on a request for Rana&rsquo;s extradition submitted by India, which Rana contested for almost five years. On May 16, 2023, a US magistrate in the Central District of California certified Rana&rsquo;s extradition to India. Rana then filed a petition for a writ of habeas corpus, which the US District Court in the Central District of California denied on August 10, 2023.
On August 15, 2024, the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit affirmed that decision.
The Supreme Court similarly denied Rana&rsquo;s &ldquo;petition for certiorari&rdquo; on January 21, 2025.
The Secretary of State issued a warrant ordering Rana&rsquo;s surrender to Indian authorities. Both the district court and the Ninth Circuit denied Rana&rsquo;s application for a stay of extradition, and on April 7, the US Supreme Court denied Rana&rsquo;s application for a stay of extradition.
On April 9, the US Marshals Service executed the Secretary&rsquo;s surrender warrant by surrendering Rana to Indian authorities for transportation to India, the statement said.
The statement also named US officials who handled the extradition litigation.
The US Marshals Service and attorneys and international affairs specialists in the Justice Department&rsquo;s Office of International Affairs provided support to this extradition, it added.
The FBI&rsquo;s Legal Attach&eacute; Office in New Delhi also assisted, the statement said.

The 26/11 terror attacks shocked the entire world and America has long supported India's efforts to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice, the US has said, as Pakistani-Canadian Tahawwur Hussain Rana was extradited to India to face justice for his involvement in the Mumbai carnage.
On April 9, the United States extradited Rana, 64, to India "to face justice for his role in planning the horrific 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks,&rdquo; US Department of State Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said Thursday.
&ldquo;The United States has long supported India's efforts to ensure those responsible for these attacks are brought to justice, and as President Trump has said, the United States and India will continue to work together to combat the global scourge of terrorism,&rdquo; she said.
Rana is in India&rsquo;s &ldquo;possession and we are very proud of that dynamic,&rdquo; she said.
Bruce added that some people may not remember the attacks that resulted in the tragic loss of 166 lives, including six Americans, that shocked the entire world.
&ldquo;I encourage you to look them up and to find out exactly how horrible this was in the importance of this situation today,&rdquo; she said.
Earlier, a spokesperson for the US Department of Justice said in a statement to PTI that Rana&rsquo;s extradition is a &ldquo;critical step toward seeking justice&rdquo; for the victims of the heinous attacks.
The DOJ spokesperson said that the US extradited the convicted terrorist and Pakistani-Canadian citizen to stand trial in India on 10 criminal charges stemming from his alleged role in the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai.
&ldquo;Rana&rsquo;s extradition is a critical step toward seeking justice for the six Americans and scores of other victims who were killed in the heinous attacks,&rdquo; the spokesperson said.
A team led by NIA authorities landed in India late Thursday with Rana who will now face justice in the country for his role and involvement in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks carried out by Pakistan based LeT terrorists.
The multi-agency team from India had gone to the US and all paperwork and legalities to bring Rana back to India were completed.
The hugely significant development comes just days after Rana&rsquo;s last-resort attempt to evade extradition to India failed after the US Supreme Court justices denied his application, moving him closer to being handed over to Indian authorities to face justice in the dastardly attacks.
Rana was lodged in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles and had submitted an &lsquo;Emergency Application For Stay Pending Litigation of Petition For Writ of Habeas Corpus' on February 27, 2025 with Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States and Circuit Justice for the Ninth Circuit Elena Kagan. Kagan had denied the application earlier last month.
Rana had then renewed his &lsquo;Emergency Application for Stay Pending Litigation of Petition for Writ of Habeas Corpus previously addressed to Justice Kagan&rsquo;, and requested that the renewed application be directed to US Chief Justice John Roberts.
An order on the Supreme Court website had noted that Rana&rsquo;s renewed application has been &ldquo;distributed for Conference&rdquo; on April 4 and the &ldquo;application&rdquo; has been &ldquo;referred to the Court.&rdquo; A notice on the Supreme Court website Monday said the application was "denied" by the court.
In his emergency application, Rana had sought a stay of his extradition and surrender to India pending litigation, asserting that if extradited to India, he will be "in danger of being subjected to torture&rdquo; and "the likelihood of torture in this case is even higher though as petitioner faces acute risk as a Muslim of Pakistani origin charged in the Mumbai attacks&rdquo;.
The application also said that his &ldquo;severe medical conditions&rdquo; render extradition to Indian detention facilities a &ldquo;de facto" death sentence in this case.
It cited medical records from July 2024 that confirm Rana has multiple &ldquo;acute and life-threatening diagnoses&rdquo;, including multiple documented heart attacks, Parkinson&rsquo;s disease with cognitive decline, a mass suggestive of bladder cancer, stage 3 chronic kidney disease, and a history of chronic asthma, and multiple COVID-19 infections.
Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani origin, is known to be associated with Pakistani-American terrorist David Coleman Headley, one of the main conspirators of the 26/11 attacks.

Investors are keeping a nervous eye on Washington for the next three months as governments scramble to cut deals to avert crippling tariffs unveiled by the US president on his April 2 "Liberation Day" but delayed for 90 days.
With Japanese companies the biggest investors into the United States, Tokyo&acute;s negotiations are of particular interest to markets -- with some describing it as the canary in the mine -- and traders took heart from early signs.
Trump posted on social media that there had been "Big Progress!" and Tokyo's envoy Ryosei Akazawa said "I understand that the US wants to make a deal within the 90 days. For our part, we want to do it as soon as possible".
And while Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba warned the talks "won't be easy", he said the president had "expressed his desire to give the negotiations... the highest priority".
Hopes that Trump's blistering tariffs can be pared back have helped temper some of the disquiet on markets after a rout at the start of the month fuelled by talk of a global recession and an upending of historic trading norms.
Some have said there were rumblings that the target of his most painful measures could be open to dialogue, with Bloomberg reporting China wants to see some measures beforehand, including reining in some cabinet members' anti-Beijing comments.
Shares in Tokyo rose along with Hong Kong, Shanghai, Sydney, Singapore, Seoul and Wellington, though Taipei edged down.
However, uncertainty continues to prevail on trading floors after a selloff on Wall Street -- and gold hitting a fresh record above $3,350 -- sparked by Powell's warning over the impact of the tariffs.
He said that while the Fed's employment and inflation goals were largely in balance at this point, policymakers could find themselves in the "challenging scenario" depending on how things evolve.
"Tariffs are highly likely to generate at least a temporary rise in inflation," he told the Economic Club of Chicago, adding that the inflationary effects "could also be more persistent."
He added: "You'll probably see continued volatility."
Chris Weston at Pepperstone said: "Powell has again frustrated some, who perhaps optimistically felt he might change the messaging from his recent communique and to open the door to cuts in the June (policy) meeting, a factor that is priced at 80 percent by interest rate swaps traders."
Oil prices extended gains after Washington on Wednesday sanctioned a second China-based "teapot" refinery for purchasing Iranian crude as it continues its "maximum pressure" campaign against Tehran.
The State Department said the measures against Shandong Shengxing Chemical were part of the US president's campaign to "drive Iran's illicit oil exports" to zero.

Trump's administration had also formally asked the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to revoke the famed seat of learning's tax-exempt status, US media reported, a day after the president first made the threat.
"Harvard can no longer be considered even a decent place of learning, and should not be considered on any list of the World's Great Universities or Colleges," Trump said on his Truth Social platform.
"Harvard is a JOKE, teaches Hate and Stupidity, and should no longer receive Federal Funds."
Trump is furious at the storied university -- which has produced 162 Nobel prize winners -- for rejecting his demand to submit to government supervision on admissions, hiring and political slant.
Other institutions, including Columbia University, have bowed to less far-ranging demands from the Trump administration, which claims that the educational elite is too left-wing.
Harvard flatly rejected the pressure, with its president, Alan Garber, saying that the university refuses to "negotiate over its independence or its constitutional rights."
 - Tax exemption -
Trump this week ordered the freezing of $2.2 billion in federal funding to Harvard, a global research powerhouse.
He also said on Tuesday that Harvard "should lose its Tax Exempt Status" as a nonprofit educational institution if it did not back down.
CNN and the Washington Post reported on Wednesday that the IRS tax bureau was now making plans to do so following a request from Trump.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Harrison Fields told AFP by email that "any forthcoming actions by the IRS will be conducted independently of the President."
He added that "investigations into any institution's violations of its tax status were initiated prior to" Trump's post on Truth Social.
The Republican's war against the intellectual elite is echoed in similar, unprecedented pressure campaigns against top law firms and big media groups, including the Associated Press.
Demonstrating the broadening resonance of the row, Golden State Warriors basketball coach Steve Kerr spoke out in support of Harvard after his team defeated the Memphis Grizzlies.
Kerr, sporting a Harvard T-shirt, called the demands on the university the "dumbest thing I've ever heard" and citing his support for "academic freedom."
 - Government seeks control -
The payments frozen to Harvard are for government contracts with its leading research programs, mostly in the medical fields where the school's laboratories are critical players in the development of new medicines and treatments.
Trump and his White House team have publicly justified their campaign against universities as a reaction to what they say is uncontrolled anti-Semitism and a need to reverse diversity programs aimed at encouraging minorities.
The anti-Semitism allegations are based on controversy over protests against Israel's war in Gaza that swept across US college campuses last year.
Columbia University in New York -- an epicenter of the protests -- stood down last month and agreed to oversight of its Middle Eastern studies department after being threatened with a loss of $400 million in federal funds.
The claims about diversity tap into long-standing conservative complaints that US university campuses are too liberal, shutting out right-wing voices and giving preference to Black and other minority groups over whites.
In the case of Harvard, the White House is seeking unprecedented levels of government control over the inner workings of the country's oldest and wealthiest university -- and one of the most respected educational and research institutions in the world.
In a letter sent to Harvard, the administration's demands included:
- ending admissions that take into account the student's race or national origins
- preventing admission of foreign students "hostile to the American values and institutions"
- ending staff hiring based on race, religion, sex or national origin
- reducing the power of students in campus governance
- auditing students and staff for "viewpoint diversity"
- reforming entire programs for "egregious records of anti-Semitism or other bias"
- cracking down on campus protests

More than 250 Virgin Atlantic passengers, including Indians, are stranded at an airport in Turkey for over 24 hours after their Mumbai-bound aircraft from London was diverted to Diyarbakir airport.
Virgin Atlantic on Thursday said it was exploring all options, including operating an alternative aircraft, to fly the passengers to Mumbai.
In a statement, the airline said the VS358 flight from London's Heathrow to Mumbai on April 2 was cancelled due to an urgent medical diversion to Diyarbakir in Turkey.
After landing at the airport, the An A350-1000 aircraft suffered a technical issue, which is being worked on.
"We are actively exploring all options, including the operation of an alternative aircraft, to ensure customers can reach Mumbai as soon as possible," it said.
A stranded passenger told PTI that all of them were sitting on the floor and there were no blankets available.
"Also, there is no vegetarian food available," the passenger said on the condition of anonymity.
In an updated statement, Virgin Atlantic said passengers were being provided with overnight hotel accommodation and refreshments in Turkey.
A passenger posted on X that over 300 Indians and British citizens were trapped in Turkey in an "awful situation."
The user, Hanuman Dass, said his family is among the stranded.

Colombia on Sunday backed down and agreed to accept deported citizens sent on US military aircraft, hours after President Donald Trump threatened painful tariffs to punish the defiance to his mass deportation plans.
Colombia's leftist president, Gustavo Petro, had earlier said he would only take back citizens "with dignity," such as on civilian planes, and had turned back two US military aircraft with repatriated Colombians.
Trump, less than a week back in office, responded furiously and threatened sanctions of 25 percent that would quickly scale up to 50 percent against Latin America's fourth largest economy.
Petro initially sought to hit back and impose his own tariffs on US products, but by the end of the volatile Sunday he had backed down.
Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo told a late-night news conference that his country had "overcome the impasse" and would accept returned citizens.
A White House statement said that Colombia has agreed to "unrestricted acceptance of all illegal aliens from Colombia returned from the United States, including on US military aircraft, without limitation or delay."
"Today's events make clear to the world that America is respected again," it said.
"President Trump will continue to fiercely protect our nation's sovereignty, and he expects all other nations of the world to fully cooperate in accepting the deportation of their citizens illegally present in the United States."
Trump said he would suspend implementation of the tariffs.
It had been unclear even earlier how quickly Trump could impose tariffs on Colombia, historically one of Washington's closest allies in Latin America, which enjoys a free-trade agreement with the United States.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, whose wife is Colombian-American, suspended issuance of visas at the US embassy in Bogota and said visas would be revoked to Colombian government officials and their immediate family members.
The White House said the visa measures would stay in place until the first planeload of deportees returns.
Trump also vowed to subject Colombians to greater scrutiny at US airports.
 - Concerns over treatment -
Trump -- who during his campaign said that immigrants were "poisoning the blood" of the United States -- took office with promises to round up and swiftly deport undocumented people.
While some countries including Guatemala have accepted military deportation flights, Trump had faced resistance from Petro, a former guerrilla elected in 2022 as Colombia's first left-wing leader.
"The United States cannot treat Colombian migrants as criminals. I forbid entry to our territory to US planes carrying Colombian migrants," Petro wrote earlier on X.
The Colombian government earlier said it was instead ready to send its presidential plane to the United States to transport the migrants "with dignity."
Petro also said there were 15,600 undocumented Americans living in his country and asked them to "regularize their situation," while ruling out raids to arrest and deport them.
Petro's initial hard-ball tactics infuriated his many critics in the historic US ally.
Former right-wing president Ivan Duque accused Petro of "an act of tremendous irresponsibility" for refusing what he called Colombia's "moral duty" to take back illegal migrants and warned US sanctions would take an "enormous" toll.
 - 'Tied hands and feet' -
Trump's deportation threats have put him on a potential collision course with governments in Latin America, the original home of most of the United States' estimated 11 million undocumented migrants.
Brazil, which is also led by a left-wing president, voiced outrage over treatment by the Trump administration of dozens of Brazilian migrants deported back to their country on Friday.
The migrants, who were deported under a bilateral agreement predating Trump's return, were handcuffed on the flight, in what Brazil called "flagrant disregard" for their basic rights.
Edgar Da Silva Moura, a 31-year-old computer technician who was among the 88 deported migrants, told AFP: "On the plane they didn't give us water, we were tied hands and feet, they wouldn't even let us go to the bathroom."
"It was very hot, some people fainted."
The president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, called for an urgent meeting of leaders from the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) to take place Thursday in Tegucigalpa to discuss migration following the latest US moves.
While previous US administrations also routinely carried out deportations, the Trump administration has begun using military aircraft, with at least one landing in Guatemala this week.

French President Emmanuel Macron said the European Union must show its muscle if US President Donald Trump makes good on his threat to target the bloc with a volley of tariffs.
"If we are attacked in terms of trade, Europe -- as a true power -- will have to stand up for itself," Macron said.
The leaders of the EU's 27 nations were huddling in the Belgian capital with Britain's prime minister and the head of NATO to discuss efforts to boost Europe's defences faced with an aggressive Russia -- as Trump's demands that American allies spend much more.
But the discussions were overshadowed by the US leader's decision to slap tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China -- with Trump threatening to target EU next.
Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk, whose country currently holds the EU presidency, said everything must be done to avoid a "totally unnecessary and stupid" trade war.
Trump has not hidden his enmity for the EU, accusing it of treating the United States "very, very unfairly" on trade.
After slapping levies on his North American neighbours and China, Trump doubled down on Sunday by saying he "definitely" planned to target the EU in future.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said a trade dispute would be "bad for the US, bad for Europe", with transatlantic "cooperation" preferable for both sides.
"We can also react," he added, veering from Germany's traditionally cautious approach to transatlantic trade relations.
"We need America, and America needs us as well," echoed the EU's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, adding there were "no winners in trade wars".
On Sunday, the European Commission said it would retaliate "firmly" if Trump hit it and decried his sweeping measures against Canada, Mexico and China.
"Tariffs create unnecessary economic disruption and drive inflation. They are hurtful to all sides," a commission spokesman said.
Up until then Brussels had said it hoped to avoid a trade conflict with Trump through negotiation.
Later European Council chief Antonio Costa held a night phone call with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
"Both leaders underscored the importance of the EU-Canada bilateral relationship and confirmed their determination to continue to working together," an EU official said.
Since Trump was re-elected in November, Brussels has been working to diversify its trading partnerships, announcing in recent weeks both a strengthened trade deal with Mexico and the resumption of talks on a free trade deal with Malaysia.
Back in 2018, during his first term, Trump imposed tariffs on European steel and aluminium exports -- leading the EU to respond with its own higher duties.

Vikesh Patel, a GE Aerospace engineer and Asra Hussain Raza, a Washington DC-based consultant were on the doomed American Airlines flight 5342 that collided with the Army helicopter as it approached the airport on Wednesday night.
Patel, from Greater Cincinnati, had recently switched jobs at the company and was an MRO Transformational Leader who travelled around the country, according to his LinkedIn page.
In a statement to FOX19, Larry Culp, chairman and CEO of GE Aerospace, which is headquartered in Evendale, identified the employee on Thursday night as Patel.
&ldquo;This is a tragedy not only for our industry but also for the GE Aerospace team as one of our cherished colleagues, Vikesh Patel, was onboard the flight,&rdquo; Culp said.
&ldquo;Our hearts are with his family and all those impacted by this horrific accident.&rdquo;
He worked for GE Aerospace for more than a decade in several roles, including Engine Assembly Engineer, Production Planner, Senior Operations Manager, Lean Transformation Coach and most recently Site Leader before his position changed. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; The collision is the deadliest aviation disaster in the US since 2001. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; Raza, 26, was one of several victims killed, her father-in-law, Dr. Hashim Raza, told CNN. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; A daughter of Indian immigrants, Raza graduated with honours in 2020 from Indiana University and married her college sweetheart in August 2023, Hashim said. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; Raza was a Washington, DC-based consultant who travelled to Wichita twice a month to work on a turnaround project for a hospital there, her father-in-law said.
