Cannes 2023: Johnny Depp tears up as he receives standing ovation after ‘Jeanne du Barry’ screening

Hollywood star Johnny Depp’s film ‘Jeanne du Barry’ premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 16. This movie marks his first major role since his high-profile defamation trial vs his former wife Amber Heard.

Depp arrived at the prestigious film festival precisely at 7 pm and posed for pictures with excited fans. A parade of stars including Palm d’Or honorary Michael Douglas, Helen Mirren, and John C. Reilly were seen making their way across the red carpet.

After the screening, Johnny Depp teared up as he received a standing ovation from the audience for his performance as King Louis XV. ‘Jeanne du Barry’ has been directed and also starring Maïwenn Le Besco.

Ahead of the Cannes opening ceremony, Amber Heard’s close friend, journalist Eve Barlow slammed those in charge of the event for ‘their history [of] supporting rapists and abusers,’ adding, ‘#CannesYouNot.’

However, the festival’s director Thierry Frémaux defended his decision to open with Depp’s movie at the festival, admitting he paid no attention to the actor’s legal woes.

‘I don’t know about the image of Johnny Depp in the US. To tell you the truth, in my life, I only have one rule: It’s the freedom of thinking, the freedom of speech and the freedom to act within a legal framework,’ he said during a press conference, according to Deadline.
