Paris Fashion Week: Things 'heat up' at the Louis Vuitton show, climate protester takes the stage

Things got heated on the runway at the Louis Vuitton show at the Paris Fashion Week on Tuesday, after climate activists from the group 'Extinction Rebellion' stormed the ramp, to protest the fashion industry's negative impact on the environment.

A protester walked the ramp holding up a banner that said, "Over-consumption = extinction." The protester was immediately tackled to the ground by security officers present at the venue, but a video recorded by bystanders went viral in minutes.

The disruption however, hardly interrupted the flow of models who charged down the runway, in a corridor of the Louvre to dramatic organ music punctuated with bell tolls.

An international network of environmental organizations, Friends of the Earth, later said, it targeted the LVMH-owned label to throw light on the issue of over-consumption, and the negative impact that high-fashion labels have on the environment.

"LVMH is the world leader of luxury and has a responsibility when it comes to trends that push the textile industry to constantly renew collection faster and produce more," said Alma Dufour, a group spokesperson.

Extinction Rebellion, Friends of the Earth and Youth For Climate, in a joint statement said, that about 30 people were involved in organizing the protest, two of whom were arrested. They called on the French government to enforce "an immediate reduction in production levels in the sector, knowing that 42 garments were sold per person in France in 2019."
