'The Crown': Netflix drama accused of trying to 'smear’ King Charles with upcoming scene

The fifth season of ‘The Crown’ is all set to stream on Netflix from November 9. However, the upcoming season of the royal drama is facing criticism from former UK prime minster Sir John Major. A recent report from The Daily Mail claims that the series shows King Charles swaying Prime Minister John Major in an attempt to force his mother Queen Elizabeth II’s abdication when he was Prince of Wales.

On Sunday, Sir John Major told The Mail that his meeting with King Charles never happened and called the scene a ‘barrel load of malicious nonsense’.

A source told the publication that ‘all the dialogue is completely made up, and all the one-to-one conversations on screen are utter fiction and some scenes have been entirely created for dramatic and commercial purposes with little regard for the truth. People should be boycotting it.’

Friends of the royals are urging audience to boycott 'The Crown' and are allegedly calling the portrayal ‘false, unfair and deeply wounding.’

According to a report in The Guardian, US streaming company Netflix has hit back at the criticism, saying the show ‘has always been presented as a drama based on historical events’.

‘Series five is a fictional dramatisation, imagining what could have happened behind closed doors during a significant decade for the royal family – one that has already been scrutinised and well-documented by journalists, biographers and historians,’ a spokesperson said.
