'The Godfather' actor James Caan dies at 82, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Adam Sandler pay tribute

James Caan, best known for portraying the role of Sonny Corleone in 'The Godfather,' passed away at the age 82. The news was shared on the actor's official Twitter account on Thursday night. The tweet informed that James died on the evening of July 6 and urged fans to respect the family's privacy during this difficult time.

'It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6. The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time,' read the tweet.

Caan's movie and TV career spanned over 60 years. Apart from 'The Godfather,' some of his other notable films include 'Brian's Song' (1971), 'Rollerball' (1975), 'Misery' (1990), 'Eraser' (1996) and 'Elf' (2003).

Fans and colleagues are grieving the actor's death.

In a statement, Al Pacino, who starred with Caan in 1972 film 'The Godfather,' said that Jimmay was 'a great actor, a brilliant director, and dear friend' and he is going to miss him.

'Jimmy was my fictional brother and my lifelong friend. It’s hard to believe that he won’t be in the world anymore because he was so alive and daring. A great actor, a brilliant director and my dear friend. I loved him, gonna miss him,' Al Pacino said.

Robert De Niro, who starred with Caan in 'The Godfather: Part II,' said that he was sad to hear about Jimmy's passing.

In a tweet, Adam Sandler said that he Loved Caan very much and always wanted to be like him.
'So happy I got to know him. Never ever stopped laughing when I was around that man. His movies were best of the best,' he wrote.

Caan is survived by sons Scott, James, Jacob and Alexander, and daughter Tara.
