<p>Filmmaker Payal Kapadia's "All We Imagine As Light" has bagged a nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 30th annual Critics Choice Awards.</p>
<p>The nominations for the awards ceremony, to be held on January 12, 2025, were announced on Thursday evening by the Critics Choice Association (CCA).</p>
<p>In the best foreign language film category, "All We Imagine As Light" is pitted against France's "Emilia P&eacute;rez", Latvia's "Flow", Ireland's "Kneecap", Brazil's "I'm Still Here" and Germany's "The Seed of the Sacred Fig", which is directed by dissident Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof.</p>
<p>The nod at the Critics Choice Awards for "All We Imagine As Light" comes days after the film picked up two nominations at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards.</p>
<p>The Malayalam-Hindi film, which marks Kapadia's feature directorial debut, is nominated for Best Motion Picture Non-English Language and the Best Direction - Motion Picture at the upcoming awards.</p>
<p>The film, an official India-French co-production, charted history by becoming the first Indian title from India to win the Grand Prix Award at the Cannes Film Festival in May.</p>
<p>It follows two nurses Prabha (Kani Kusruti) and Anu (Divya Prabha) from Kerala navigating life and love in Mumbai along with their friend and cook Parvaty (Chhaya Kadam).</p>
<p>Just recently, the movie was named the Best International Film by New York Film Critics Circle and won an award in the same category at the Gotham Awards.</p>
<p>"All We Imagine As Light" claimed the top spot at the Sight and Sound magazine's annual list of 50 best movies of the year.</p>

<p>Hindi cinema is going through a lull phase but this churning will, hopefully, lead to something better as creative people always find a way, says actor Manoj Bajpayee.</p>
<p>In a year where the box office once again appears to be dominated by blockbusters from the South like "Kalki 2898 AD" and "Pushpa 2: The Rule", the successful business of "Stree 2", "Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3", and "Singham Again" has given some hope to Bollywood.</p>
<p>Asked whether Hindi cinema was in "trouble", Bajpayee said that wasn't the case.</p>
<p>"... But it is forcing filmmakers to think differently. And there is nothing wrong with it. I think it is churning, it's a lull period. I'm hopeful that it will go back to its natural self very soon.</p>
<p>"I don't see it as a problem because creative people always find a way. It is a jolt, a shock. And, now they are thinking hard and trying to come together to find a solution to it. And they will find a solution," the actor told PTI in an interview during a visit to the news agency's headquarters.</p>
<p>Bajpayee said the horror comedy "Stree 2", which earned over Rs 800 crore at the box office, did "remarkable" business.</p>
<p>"That means people are somewhere willing to go to theatres but they want something else. And that 'something else', a filmmaker has to really innovate and think hard about... My films these days come onto OTT and they have an even bigger audience.</p>
<p>"Last year, my film 'Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai' amassed historical views on OTT. If we convert it into rupees (box office collection), then it would be called an all-time blockbuster. The same goes for 'Gulmohar'."</p>

<p>"We always search for a hero in our films. In the changing times, people stopped getting their hero because there were many multiplexes. The South never let the multiplexes flourish and maintained unity. They knew that their cinema would survive only through mass audiences.</p>
<p>"But we (Hindi industry) changed because while multiplexes were coming up, an aspirational India was also emerging. They wanted their hero. The kind of heroes they got, who ruled for 20-30 years... During COVID, there was a shift as mass audiences were going to theatres in big numbers but the multiplex audience chose to sit at home and enjoy OTT."</p>
<p>Rising ticket costs could also be a factor in people choosing to stay at home and enjoy movies on the OTT, according to Bajpayee.</p>
<p>Citing the example of "Pushpa 2" star Allu Arjun, he said the Telugu actor is giving the audiences the kind of films they want.</p>
<p>"The person who is going to the theatres is a mass guy and he can't afford the ticket for a multiplex. Our mass audience can't go to the multiplex but even if they can go there, they want to see 'Pathaan', 'Jawan' or 'Animal'. The single screens are running packed and their audience sees their hero in Allu Arjun. He is giving them the kind of film that should be enjoyed in theatres," added the actor, who worked with Arjun in "Vedam" and "Happy".</p>
<p>Whether it is Allu Arjun, Jr NTR or Mahesh Babu, the audiences in the north are not new to these actors as they have been watching their Hindi-dubbed films for years now through satellite TV channels and streamers, the actor said.</p>
<p>"I did some Tamil and Telugu films during those days. One day someone told me that they liked my movie 'Khatron Ka Khiladi'. I wondered when I did a film titled 'Khatron Ka Khiladi'?' Later I realised that it was the name of my Telugu or Tamil films which were dubbed in Hindi," said Bajpayee, who has starred in Tamil movies "Anjaan" and "Samar" and Telugu titles "Prema Katha" and "Puli".</p>
<p>Bajpayee, who is friends with many Malayalam actors and filmmakers, said he wants to venture into Malayalam films.</p>
<p>"They are making very good films. But they are also aware of the fact that I don't know the language. So, they'll get me those roles that have very less Malayalam dialogues or a character who speaks Hindi, English or doesn't speak a word."</p>

Diljit Dosanjh Advised to Avoid Alcohol-Related Songs During Chandigarh Concert

<p>The advisory issued by the CCPCR chairperson Shipra Bansal on Thursday, specifically mentioned songs like 'Patiala Peg', '5 Tara', and 'Case' etc, cautioning against even altered versions that promote alcohol, drugs or violence.</p>

<p>Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights (CCPCR) has advised singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh, set to perform here on Saturday, to refrain from singing alcohol-themed songs during his live show, citing their adverse impact on children of impressionable age.</p>
<p>The advisory issued by the CCPCR chairperson Shipra Bansal on Thursday, specifically mentioned songs like 'Patiala Peg', '5 Tara', and 'Case' etc, cautioning against even altered versions that promote alcohol, drugs or violence.</p>
<p>"Avoid performing the songs i.E. Patiala Peg, 5 Tara, Case etc, even with twisted words in which alcohol, drugs and violence are promoted. These songs affect the children of impressionable age," the advisory read.</p>
<p>This follows a similar directive issued last month by the Telangana government during Dosanjh's live show in Hyderabad, where he was advised against promoting alcohol and drugs. The notice also restricted from inviting children on stage due to loud sounds and flashing lights.</p>
<p>The singer began the India leg of his Dil-Luminati Tour from Delhi in October this year.</p>
<p>In the Chandigarh advisory, the CCPCR chairperson said, "It has come to our notice that Diljit Dosanjh is going to perform in his live show scheduled for December 14, at Exhibition Ground, Sector-34, Chandigarh."</p>
<p>"After going through the representation received by the Commission, the CCPCR has decided to issue the following advisory in the best interest of the children," it said.</p>
<p>The advisory noted that as per the World Health Organization's (WHO) report, adults should not be exposed to sound with a peak pressure level above 140db (decibel).</p>
<p>"For children, the level is reduced to 120 dB. It is advisable to not invite children on stage during the live show where peak sound pressure level is above 120db which is harmful for children," the advisory said.</p>
<p>The commission's advisory also asked to ensure that people aged below 25 years are not served alcohol as it is which is punishable under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 and other provisions of law.</p>
<p>"You are therefore requested to comply with the advisory issued by the commission in the best interest of children," it said, addressing the singer, event organisers and concerned authorities.</p>
<p>A copy of the advisory has also been forwarded to the Chandigarh Excise and Taxation Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police, among others for necessary action.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, a delegation led by Chandigarh BJP's former president Arun Sood met the Deputy Commissioner here on Wednesday demanding a change in venue for the concerts of Dosanjh and Punjabi rapper A.P Dhillon, scheduled for December 14 and 21, respectively.</p>
<p>Sood cited that a recent event at the Sector 34 ground here by rapper-singer Karan Aujla had led to traffic congestion which caused inconvenience for residents.</p>
<p>The delegation demanded that the upcoming concerts be shifted from Sector 34 to Sector 25 rally grounds to avoid inconvenience and hardships for locals.</p>
<p>Arun Sood said, "There has been a lot of anguish among residents and businessmen of Chandigarh, especially in sector 34 and surrounding sectors after the recent music show of Punjabi singer Karan Aujla at the exhibition ground."</p>
<p>He said that locals and businessmen of Chandigarh were affected by the rush of thousands of people, and their vehicles choking the city.</p>
<p>"We are not against the music concerts in the city, but our only concern is the venue," Sood said, adding that he himself is a big fan of Punjabi artists and music.</p>

HBO has renewed "Dune: Prophecy" for a second season ahead of the premiere of the final episode. The prequel series, set 10,000 years before Frank Herbert’s "Dune," stars Tabu as Sister Francesca.

<p>American premium cable network HBO has given a second season order for "Dune: Prophecy", the prequel series to Denis Villeneuve&rsquo;s blockbuster &ldquo;Dune&rdquo; movies.</p>
<p>Also featuring Bollywood star Tabu in a pivotal role, the six-episode series is set 10,000 years before the events of Frank Herbert&rsquo;s seminal novel &ldquo;Dune&rdquo;, which was recently adapted by Villeneuve in two parts.</p>
<p>The show's renewal for season two comes ahead of the premiere of the final episode, which will air on HBO on December 22. The show streams on JioCinema in India.</p>
<p>"'Dune: Prophecy' has captivated audiences around the globe thanks to the visionary leadership of showrunner and executive producer Alison Schapker, who will continue to guide this grand tale of truth and power.</p>
<p>"We are incredibly grateful to our partners at Legendary and to our extraordinary cast and crew for their service to the Imperium. We&rsquo;re excited to collaborate with this team again to see what they have in store," Sarah Aubrey, Head of Max Original Programming, said in a statement.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Dune: Prophecy&rdquo; promises a rich narrative filled with intrigue and power struggles within the &ldquo;Dune&rdquo; universe.</p>
<p>The show features an ensemble cast of Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, Jodhi May, Mark Strong, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Josh Heuston, Chloe Lea, Jade Anouka, Faoileann Cunningham, Edward Davis, Aoife Hinds, Chris Mason, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Camilla Beeput, Jihae, Charithra Chandran, Jessica Barden, Emma Canning, and Yerin Ha.</p>
<p>As per official logline, the show follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Dune: Prophecy&rdquo; is based on the novel &rdquo;Sisterhood of Dune&rdquo; by Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson.</p>
<p>In the show, Tabu plays the role of Sister Francesca, described as a &rdquo;strong, intelligent, and alluring&rdquo; character, who leaves a lasting impression in her wake.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Once a great love of the Emperor, her return to the palace strains the balance of power in the capital,&rdquo; the character description read.</p>

<p>It was an evening filled with music and madness as Karan Aujla mesmerised fans with an electrifying performance in the Delhi-NCR region that turned out to be star-studded affair with Varun Dhawan, Badshah and Nora Fatehi joining in the fun on the first two days of the Punjabi sensation's India tour.</p>
<p>The singer, who gave voice to the viral Vicky Kaushal song "Tauba Tauba", performed in Gurugram's Airia Mall on December 15 and 17 as part of his "It Was All A Dream" tour, will take to the stage once again on December 19.</p>
<p>While the first show drew over 12,000 concert goers, the second concert drew a bigger crowd with over 15,000 fans turning up to listen to the musician, also known for chartbusters "Softly", "Wavy" and "Making Memories".</p>
<p>The crowd went "Aujla, Aujla" when the singer made a dramatic entry through a trap door in the middle of the stage and greeted them with an enthusiastic "Aur Dilliwalon!"</p>
<p>Aujla may have become a sensation for many post "Tauba Tauba", but his true fans have followed the Canada-based singer for years.</p>
<p>"I have been listening to Karan Aujla since 2016. I have listened to almost all of his songs. He is a great artist, and I am excited that I got a chance to come to his concert," a fan said.</p>
<p>Then, there were those who wanted the singer to croon their favourites like "Softly" and "Bachke Bachke".</p>
<p>"There is a lot of excitement. Three parties have happened (concerts of Diljit Dosanjh and AP Dhillon and Karan Aujla). This is the best party out of all," said another concert-goer.</p>
<p>The singer also performed songs such as "Gangsta", "Kya Baat", "IDK HOW", "Jee Ni Lagda" and the fan-favourite "Tauba Tauba".</p>
<p>Just like the first show, which had a guest in Dhawan who came to promote his latest movie "Baby John", Aujla had another surprise for his fans.</p>
<p>Dancer-actor Fatehi joined the singer on stage to preview their latest musical collaboration "Aaye Haaye", which resulted in the crowd erupting in joy. Fatehi danced and sang along with Aujla, adding a touch of glamour to the already high-energy concert.</p>
<p>Taking a brief break from his chart-topping hits, Aujla got the crowd grooving to a rendition of "O Oh Jaane Jaana", Salman Khan's popular song from the 1998 movie "Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya".</p>
<p>Towards the end, drones flew, forming a stunning visual display spelling out the singer's name in the sky, followed by a portrait of his late parents.</p>
<p>The concert was presented by Team Innovation and supported by Live Nation.</p>
<p>After Delhi-NCR, Aujla's tour will travel to Mumbai for two shows on December 21 and 22.</p>
<p>The singer will also perform in Kolkata, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad.</p>

<p>Popeye can punch without permission and Tintin can roam freely starting in 2025. The two classic comic characters who first appeared in 1929 are among the intellectual properties becoming public domain in the United States on Jan 1. That means they can be used and repurposed without permission or payment to copyright holders.</p>
<p>This year&rsquo;s crop of newly public artistic creations lacks the landmark vibes of last year&rsquo;s entrance into the public domain of Mickey Mouse. But they include a deep well of canonical works whose 95-year copyright maximums will expire. And the Disney icon&rsquo;s public domain presence expands.</p>
<p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a trove! There are a dozen new Mickey cartoons &mdash; he speaks for the first time and dons the familiar white gloves,&rdquo; said Jennifer Jenkins, director of Duke&rsquo;s Center for the Study of the Public Domain. &ldquo;There are masterpieces from Faulkner and Hemingway, the first sound films from Alfred Hitchcock, Cecil B. <p>Here&rsquo;s a closer look at this year&rsquo;s crop.</p>
<p>Comics characters loom large: &nbsp;Popeye the Sailor, with his bulging forearms, mealy-mouthed speech, and propensity for fistfights, was created by E.C. Segar and made his first appearance in the newspaper strip &ldquo;Thimble Theater&rdquo; in 1929, speaking his first words, &ldquo;&lsquo;Ja think I&rsquo;m a cowboy?&rdquo; when asked if he was a sailor. What was supposed to be a one-off appearance became permanent, and the strip would be renamed &rdquo;Popeye.&rdquo;</p>
<p>But as with Mickey Mouse last year and Winnie the Pooh in 2022, only the earliest version is free for reuse. The spinach that gave the sailor his super-strength was not there from the start and is the kind of character element that could spawn legal disputes. The animated shorts featuring his distinctive mumbly voice didn&rsquo;t begin until 1933 and remain under copyright. As does director Robert Altman&rsquo;s 1980 film, starring Robin Williams as Popeye and Shelley Duvall as his oft-fought-over sweetheart Olive Oyl. That movie was tepidly received initially. So was director Steven Spielberg&rsquo;s &ldquo;Adventures of Tintin&rdquo; in 2011. But the comics about the boy reporter that inspired it, the creation of Belgian artist Herge, were among the most popular in Europe for much of the 20th century.</p>
<p>The simply drawn teen with dots for eyes and bangs like an ocean wave first appeared in a supplement to the Belgian newspaper Le Vingti&egrave;me Si&egrave;cle and became a weekly feature.</p>
<p>The comic also first appeared in the US in 1929. Its signature bright colours &mdash; including Tintin&rsquo;s red hair &mdash; didn&rsquo;t appear until years later, and could, like Popeye&rsquo;s spinach, be the subject of legal disputes.</p>
<p>And in much of the world, Tintin won&rsquo;t become public property until 70 years after the 1983 death of his creator.</p>
<p>Books show American lit at its height: The books becoming public this year read like the syllabus for an American literature seminar.</p>
<p>&ldquo;The Sound and the Fury,&rdquo; arguably William Faulkner&rsquo;s quintessential novel with its modernist stream-of-consciousness style, was a sensation after its publication despite being famously difficult for readers. It uses multiple non-linear narratives to tell the story of a prominent family&rsquo;s ruin in the author&rsquo;s native Mississippi and would help lead to Faulkner&rsquo;s Nobel Prize.</p>
<p>And Ernest Hemingway&rsquo;s &ldquo;A Farewell to Arms&rdquo; joins his earlier &ldquo;The Sun Also Rises&rdquo; in the public domain. The partly autobiographical story of an ambulance driver in Italy during the First World War cemented Hemingway&rsquo;s status in the American literary canon. It has been frequently adapted for film, TV and radio, which can now be done without permission.</p>
<p>John Steinbeck&rsquo;s first novel, &ldquo;A Cup of Gold,&rdquo; from 1929, will also enter the public domain.</p>
<p>The British novelist Virginia Woolf&rsquo;s &ldquo;A Room of One&rsquo;s Own,&rdquo; an extended essay that would become a landmark in feminism from the modernist literary luminary, is also on the list. Her novel &ldquo;Mrs. Dalloway&rdquo; is already in the US public domain.</p>
<p>Movie legends in the making: While a host of truly major movies will become public in the coming decade, for now, early works by major figures from the not-always-stellar early sound era will have to suffice. A decade before he would move to Hollywood and make films like &ldquo;Psycho,&rdquo; and &ldquo;Vertigo,&rdquo; Alfred Hitchcock made &ldquo;Blackmail&rdquo; in Britain. The film was begun as a silent but shifted to sound during production, resulting in two different versions, one of them the UK&rsquo;s &mdash; and Hitchcock&rsquo;s &mdash; first sound film.</p>
<p>John Ford, whose later Westerns would put him among film&rsquo;s most vaunted directors, also made his first foray into sound with 1929&rsquo;s &ldquo;The Black Watch,&rdquo; an adventure epic that includes Ford&rsquo;s future chief collaborator John Wayne as a young extra.</p>
<p>Cecil B DeMille, already a Hollywood bigwig through silents, made his first talkie with the melodrama &ldquo;Dynamite.&rdquo; Groucho, Harpo and the other Marx Brothers had their first starring movie roles in 1929&rsquo;s &ldquo;The Cocoanuts,&rdquo; a forerunner to future classics like &ldquo;Animal Crackers&rdquo; and &ldquo;Duck Soup.&rdquo;</p>
<p>&ldquo;The Broadway Melody,&rdquo; the first sound film and the second film ever to win the Oscar for best picture &mdash; known as &ldquo;outstanding production&rdquo; at the time &mdash; will also become public, though it&rsquo;s often ranked among the worst of best picture winners. And after &ldquo;Steamboat Willie&rdquo; made the earliest Mickey Mouse public, a dozen more of his animations will get the same status, including &ldquo;The Karnival Kid,&rdquo; where he spoke for the first time.</p>
<p>Music rings out the 20s: Songs from the last year of the Roaring Twenties are also about to become public property.</p>
<p>Cole Porter&rsquo;s compositions &ldquo;What Is This Thing Called Love?&rdquo; and &ldquo;Tiptoe Through the Tulips&rdquo; are among the highlights, as is the jazz classic &ldquo;Ain&rsquo;t Misbehavin&rsquo;, written by Fats Waller and Harry Brooks.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Singin&rsquo; in the Rain,&rdquo; which would later forever be associated with the 1952 Gene Kelly film, made its debut in the 1929 movie &ldquo;The Hollywood Revue&rdquo; and will now be public domain.</p>
<p>Different laws regulate sound recordings, and those newly in the public domain date to 1924. They include a recording of &ldquo;Nobody Knows the Trouble I&rsquo;ve Seen&rdquo; from future star and civil rights icon Marian Anderson, and &ldquo;Rhapsody in Blue&rdquo; performed by its composer George Gershwin.</p>
