Vir Das stands up for Coldplay concert newcomers during historic India tour

Stand-up comedian and actor Vir Das responded on Monday to the backlash about concertgoers attending Coldplay's India tour without knowing the band's songs.

Coldplay’s India tour has been making waves, but a different conversation emerged when some fans criticized others for attending the concerts without being familiar with the band’s music. Das expressed his frustration about these complaints on his X account.

He described the posts as “asinine” and wrote, "The number of asinine 'bro, they don't even know any Coldplay songs, they just showed up' posts I have seen. So? Good. Now they do. It's lights, music, dancing, and fun. Everyone's entitled to enjoy. You don't have the monopoly on fun just because you sobbed to 'Yellow' one time."

Coldplay’s tour in India included five concerts, with performances in Mumbai on January 18, 19, and 21, followed by two shows in Ahmedabad on January 25 and 26. Their Republic Day concert on January 26 set a record with 1.34 lakh attendees, marking their largest show in India.

After their second-to-last concert, Coldplay took to their X account to thank fans, writing, "Thank you Ahmedabad, thank you India. We'll never forget these two weeks. Your love and kindness will stay with us forever."

Earlier that day, the band shared a playful post, drawing a cricket ball from the stadium and captioning it, "Ahmedabad, 1/25."

Chris Martin humorously added, "I think even Jasprit might struggle to bowl with this badly drawn ball, but at least it is almost spherical. It is such a pleasure to be here at this amazing stadium and to play in Ahmedabad for the very first time."

In addition to their high-energy performances, Coldplay paid tribute to India on Republic Day.

Martin sang "Vande Mataram" and "Maa Tujhhe Salaam," with the crowd responding with enthusiastic applause. He concluded the tribute by saying, "Salute to Mother India" and wished everyone a happy Republic Day.

One of the highlights of the concert came when Chris Martin dedicated a song to Indian cricketer Jasprit Bumrah. In a playful tone, Martin said, "O Jasprit Bumrah, my beautiful brother. The best bowler in the whole of cricket. We did not enjoy watching you destroy England, wicket after wicket."

This fun tribute bridged the gap between cricket and music, adding to the concert's joy.

Coldplay's India tour, organized by BookMyShow Live, concluded with performances in Ahmedabad on January 25 and 26. The final show was live-streamed on Disney+ Hotstar, allowing fans across the country to enjoy it from home.

With memorable performances, patriotic tributes, and moments of humor, Coldplay’s tour left a lasting impact on India's music landscape, strengthening their bond with Indian fans.
