A 3-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India UU Lalit noted that the court had set up a special investigation team (SIT) to probe 9 major cases, and trial had concluded in 8 of them.

Even as the 2002 Gujarat riots are in news again due to the Bilkis Bano case, the Supreme Court of India disposed of a batch of 11 petitions relating to the terrible events.

The petitions had been pending for two decades, seeking the Supreme Court's intervention in Gujarat riots cases. The court said that the petitions had become infructuous due to subsequent developments.

A 3-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India UU Lalit noted that the court had set up a special investigation team (SIT) to probe 9 major cases, and trial had concluded in 8 of them. The apex court asked the SIT to bring the Naroda Gam case to its conclusion as well.

The judges said that the petitioners had also accepted that the matters had become infructuous.
