Amid hijab row, Karnataka MLA says rapes happen because women don't follow 'pardah'

For a lot of political leaders in India, rape is the fault of everyone but the rapist. Now amid a raging controversy over wearing of hijabs in schools, a Karnataka MLA has his own theory.

Karnataka MLA Zameer Ahmed has said rapes happen because women don't follow the practice of 'pardah'.

He further added that the wearing of hijab is not compulsory, only people who want to protect themselves or hide their beauty wear it.

The wearing of hijab by Muslim girls has become central point of a controversy with for and against demonstrations being carried out across the country.

The controversy erupted when schools girls in Karnataka where prohibited from entering classrooms for wearing a hijab citing a state law.
