Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has pledged to oppose the Waqf Amendment Bill and announced Rs 200 crore for Malerkotla&rsquo;s development, including infrastructure, education, and healthcare.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann announced on Monday that the state government will strongly oppose the Waqf Amendment Bill introduced by the BJP-led NDA government.&nbsp;
Speaking to the media after participating in the Eid festival, Mann stated that the Muslim community has vehemently opposed the bill and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is fully supportive of their stance. He assured that the party would stand firmly against the bill in both the Parliament and the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, aiming to protect the interests of the Muslim community.&nbsp;
"Our government is fully committed to ensuring the well-being of every section of society, and no stone will be left unturned in safeguarding their rights," Mann emphasized.
Responding to a query about groundwater management, the Chief Minister highlighted that the state government is committed to optimizing groundwater usage. He pointed out that since the AAP government took charge, a total of 15,947 watercourses have been revived in the state, ensuring that water has reached even the most remote villages. This initiative is helping conserve groundwater while also ensuring that farmers have access to irrigation through canal water.
Mann expressed his satisfaction with the support for the "Yudh Nasheyan Virudh" (War on Drugs) campaign, particularly the prayers offered at local Eid Gahs. He stressed that tackling the drug menace in Punjab requires active public participation, which is essential to make the state drug-free. "The fight against drugs can only be won with the cooperation of the people," he said, underscoring the importance of public involvement in this critical issue.
The Chief Minister also discussed the ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure in Punjab, announcing a comprehensive plan to give all state roads a complete facelift. He emphasized that the development of roads plays a key role in facilitating transportation and boosting economic growth. "These roads will not only improve commuting but also act as a catalyst for the state&rsquo;s economic development," he said.
In a significant move, Chief Minister Mann announced Rs 200 crore in development projects for the historic town of Malerkotla, marking a major Eid bonanza for the local Muslim community. The Chief Minister highlighted that Malerkotla, with its rich historical and cultural significance, would receive a major upgrade with the allocated funds. Mann expressed his hopes that these projects would help strengthen the bonds of communal harmony, peace, and brotherhood in the state.
The Chief Minister also vowed to turn Malerkotla into a "Model District," acknowledging the historical contributions of the Nawab of Malerkotla, who opposed the execution of the Chhota Sahibzadas. He assured that the district would be equipped with modern infrastructure and civic amenities, with efforts already underway to develop the city comprehensively.
In addition, Mann announced the construction of a 100-seat medical college and a 200-bed super-specialty hospital in Malerkotla, which would make the district a hub for medical education and healthcare services. The existing girls' college will also be upgraded to improve educational facilities in the region. Mann said that the government had allocated funds for the construction of a new District Administrative Complex and Tehsil Complex in Malerkotla, as well as a Tehsil Complex in Amargarh.
The Chief Minister also shared plans to improve connectivity with the construction of new roads, including strengthening Jarg-Rauni and Khanna Road, as well as building new bus stands, sanitation facilities, and playgrounds in Malerkotla and nearby villages. He also announced the launch of a Mini Bus Service for rural areas, which will provide job opportunities for unemployed youth and improve transport in rural regions.
Mann reiterated that the state government would continue its fight against illegal properties, corruption in the Revenue Department, and the drug menace, with Rs 200 crore allocated for Malerkotla&rsquo;s development. He concluded by assuring that the state government is dedicated to the inclusive growth and prosperity of the district.

The Cabinet Minister mentioned that landowners can verify their land mapping details on the Mandi Board portal "emandikaran-pb.in."
Additionally, Khudian informed that J-form holder farmers can now register for the Ayushman Health Scheme through their concerned Market Committee for comprehensive healthcare support. Speaking to ANI, Sharma expressed his enthusiasm about attending the Maha Kumbh for the first time, saying, "There was a lot of excitement as I was attending the Maha Kumbh for the first time. I also did 'snan' in Ganga. It was an amazing experience, and I am very happy."
The Maha Kumbh Mela, celebrated in Hindu tradition, is the world's largest public gathering and an important religious event. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday said implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) would prevent crimes like the Shraddha Walkar murder case in Delhi.
He said a provision of the law mandates disclosure of live-in relationships to families.
In May 2022, 25-year-old Shraddha Walkar was allegedly murdered by her live-in partner Aftab, who sawed her body into pieces and stored it in a refrigerator for almost three weeks, before disposing of them over several days.
Speaking at an event at Invertis University in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly, where he was felicitated for implementing the UCC in Uttarakhand, Dhami dedicated the honour to the people of the state.
Holding up a ceremonial mace presented to him, he said the law is a significant step towards empowering women and protecting the rights of children born out of live-in relationships.
Targeting opposition parties, the chief minister accused them of using people only for votes.
Claiming that many Muslim women expressed gratitude to the BJP government after implementation of the UCC, he reiterated his commitment to making Uttarakhand a model state and assured the effective enforcement of the new law.
He said the UCC&rsquo;s impact would not remain confined to Uttarakhand but gradually extend across the country. Comparing it to river Ganga originating from Gangotri and nourishing the entire country, he expressed confidence that the UCC would soon be implemented nationwide.
Clarifying that the UCC is not against any religion or community, he said the law would resolve inheritance disputes and contribute to women&rsquo;s empowerment.
Speaking to media, Dhami credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi&rsquo;s leadership for the implementation of the UCC in Uttarakhand.
He also took a jibe at Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, saying that during the tenures of Yadav and his father Mulayam Singh, the Ram temple could not be built and karsevaks were fired upon.
He emphasised the principle of 'One Nation, One Law' and said the UCC aligns with India's constitutional framework and the development trajectory envisioned under Prime Minister Modi.
Dhami highlighted that several long-awaited reforms, such as the abrogation of Article 370, the construction of Ram temple, enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act and the triple talaq ban, have materialised after 2014.
On roadmap for the UCC, Dhami recalled that the BJP had promised its implementation in Uttarakhand during the 2022 assembly elections. Breaking a longstanding trend of alternating governments, people re-elected BJP in the state, enabling the fulfilment of this pledge.
"We do what we promise," he remarked, declaring Uttarakhand as the first state to enact the uniform code for all residents, irrespective of religion or caste.
Asked about being referred to as a 'Hindu Hriday Samrat' (Emperor of Hindu Hearts), Dhami described himself as a simple party worker focused on fulfilling his responsibilities.
Coming from a military family, he said he had witnessed various challenges in life and believed in working for results rather than titles.
Addressing concerns of the critics of UCC, he said those rejecting the Constitution&rsquo;s provisions and governance structures were "anti-system and anti-Constitution elements" who did not respect Dr B R Ambedkar&rsquo;s vision. He reaffirmed the BJP's commitment to the principle of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas and Sabka Prayas'.
On the exclusion of tribal communities and inclusion of Muslims in the UCC, Dhami said the Constitution provides special provisions for tribals due to their unique customs and way of life.
He said Uttarakhand&rsquo;s UCC was formulated after consulting with over 2.36 lakh people, engaging with all political parties, religious organisations and various communities, including tribal representatives.
Acknowledging that legal provisions evolve over time, he pointed out that the Modi government has already simplified numerous laws and repealed outdated ones.
The event was attended by Bareilly Mayor Umesh Gautam and Invertis University Chancellor Parth Gautam.

A 1992-batch IAS officer, Bardhan held several key positions in the state in his 33-year career.
Soon after taking charge, Bardhan said successful implementation of the government's policies, livelihood, employment, skill development and reverse migration will be among his major priorities.
Working on new livelihood opportunities and developing infrastructure are very important for the progress of the state, Bardhan said.
"We also have to work continuously to improve health services. Water conservation is also a big issue as the whole world is facing water crisis. There is a need to do effective work on the ground in the interest of the common citizen on these main issues," Bardhan said.&nbsp;

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited Coronation Hospital on Monday to assess the condition of those hospitalized after consuming buckwheat flour suspected to be adulterated. The flour, supplied from Saharanpur, has led to over 100 cases of food poisoning in Dehradun district.
According to an official release, preliminary findings suggest that the flour&rsquo;s adulteration may have caused the health crisis. Addressing the media, CM Dhami confirmed that the dealer&rsquo;s shop had been sealed, and notices were issued to all locations where the flour was distributed. He also stated that the Saharanpur administration had been informed, and an investigation is underway.
"The buckwheat flour was supplied from Saharanpur. The dealer's shop has been sealed. A notice has been given to all the other places where the flour was supplied. We have informed the Saharanpur administration regarding the same. People who fell ill are receiving treatment here. Whoever is responsible for this will not be spared. An investigation is underway," CM Dhami told reporters.
The Chief Minister personally met the hospitalized patients and wished them a speedy recovery. He instructed the District Magistrate of Dehradun and Health Department officials to ensure proper treatment and increase the number of hospital beds if required.
Currently, 66 patients are admitted to Coronation Hospital, while 44 others are being treated at Doon Medical College. CM Dhami reiterated that the entire supply chain of the contaminated flour has been identified, with shops linked to the original dealer also being notified. The Saharanpur district administration has been alerted, and a joint investigation is in progress.
He assured that full medical arrangements have been made for the patients and directed the Health Secretary to conduct a thorough investigation and take strict action against those responsible.
To prevent future incidents, CM Dhami emphasized a coordinated effort between the Health Department, Food Safety Department, and other relevant agencies to investigate the matter comprehensively. He affirmed that action will be taken against any negligence to ensure food safety and public health.

Kausik Mitra, an Eastern Railway spokesperson, clarified, "The goods trains and the track both belong to the NTPC. It has nothing to do with the Indian Railways."
The railway line on which the accident occurred connects NTPC&rsquo;s Kahalgaon Super Thermal Power Station in Bihar's Bhagalpur district to the Farakka Power Plant in Murshidabad district, West Bengal.

Politics is not a full-time occupation for him and he remains a Yogi at heart, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said, parrying a query about a section of people seeing him as the future prime minister of India.
In an interview with PTI, Adityanath dismissed reports about differences between him and BJP's central leaders, noting that he is in the chief minister's chair because of the party.
"Can I remain in the chair by having differences with the party's central leaders," Adityanath asked, adding that he cannot shut the mouth of anyone stoking speculation about such differences.
To a question on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's (RSS) support for him, he said the Hindutva organisation backs anyone who is "committed to Bharat" and will inspire those who are not to turn to the right path.
The chief minister said his primary role is serving the people of Uttar Pradesh, as entrusted by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
"I am the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, and the party has placed me here to serve the people of the state," he said.
When asked about the growing support for him from a section of people as a future prime minister, Adityanath said, "Politics is not a full-time job for me. Ultimately, I am a yogi (monk) at heart."
The monk-politician also downplayed a question about his popularity as a BJP campaigner in states outside Uttar Pradesh, saying all the chief ministers are part of the party's electioneering.
When pressed, he added, "It may be that people having seen Uttar Pradesh before 2017 can see the changes more starkly. There is an enthusiasm as devotees and people from all over the country visit Uttar Pradesh."
On how long he plans to remain in politics, the chief minister said, "There will be a time frame for this as well."
Asked if his response meant that politics was not his permanent occupation, Adityanath reiterated, "Yes, that is what I am saying."
Explaining his perspective on the intersection of religion and politics, he said, "We limit religion to a confined space and restrict politics to a handful of people, and that is where the problem arises.
"If politics is driven by self-interest, it will create problems. But if it is for the greater good, it will provide solutions. We have to choose between being part of the problem or the solution, and I believe this is what religion also teaches us.
"When religion is pursued for self-interest, it creates new challenges. However, when one dedicates themselves to a higher purpose, it opens up new avenues for progress."
Adityanath also said that Indian tradition does not associate religion with self-interest.
On whether he considers himself more of a religious figure or a political leader, he asserted, "I work as a citizen and do not consider myself special. As a citizen, my constitutional duties come first.
"For me, the nation is paramount. If the country is safe, my religion is safe. When religion is secure, the path to welfare automatically opens."
Asked how he would like him or his legacy to be remembered, Adityanath said light-heartedly that there is no need for others to remember him as he is very much present.
He then added, "It is not the name but the work that should be remembered. One's identity should be through their work, not their name."

A seek and destroy operation to track down three terrorists, believed to be hiding in a forested area in Panjthirthi-Barota in Kathua following an encounter last night, resumed Tuesday with multiple agencies engaged in the effort, officials said.
The area was placed under a cordon after the Monday night gunfire between police and terrorists.
The officials said the three terrorists are believed to be from a group that had its first face-off with security forces in the Nursery area near the International Border on March 23. All of the terrorists had managed to escape.
Four days later, security forces engaged them in an encounter in a forest area of the Sanyal belt of Kathua when two terrorists were eliminated, and the rest managed to flee. During this exchange of fire, four policemen were also killed and three others injured.
With the hiding terrorists changing their locations in the jungle, the security forces have launched a multi-agency operation to track them down.
The search operation was intensified early on Monday morning with aerial surveillance and sniffer dogs being deployed, culminating into a fresh encounter in the night. A night cordon was laid to ensure that the three terrorists holed-up in the forests do not escape, sources said late on Monday.

"Search and destroy operations were launched at first light on Tuesday morning. &nbsp;Operations in progress", the Army's rising star corps said on its X handle.
"Acting on intelligence inputs, multiple surveillance-cum-ambushes were deployed in general area Panjtirthi Kathua by Indian Army, Police and CRPF. Suspicious movement was observed on the night of 31 March, leading to an exchange of fire," it added.
On Monday, the operation -- by a team of officers from the Army, Police, NSG, CRPF, and BSF -- was carried out in the forested belts of Rui, Juthana, Ghati, and Sanyal in the Rajbagh region, as well as parts of Billawar, officials said.
The night before, three suspicious persons dressed in black robes and carrying bags had entered the house of a villager, named Shanker, in Rui village and asked a lone elderly woman for water.
Before fleeing, they barged into her kitchen and took away 'rotis' and 'sabzi'. They also tried to give her two Rs 500 notes before escaping. She refused.
Security agencies say it is difficult for terrorists to survive without a network of overground workers (OGWs) who provide them with food, shelter, and guidance.
The forces have picked up six persons, including some women from one family, for questioning, as it is alleged they provided assistance to terrorists operating in the region, the officials said.
The detained individuals allegedly belong to the family of suspected overground worker (OGW) Mohammad Latief, who is already in jail under the Public Safety Act (PSA), for aiding terrorists in Malhar during an attack on an Army truck last year, in which six soldiers lost their lives.
The slain terrorist Abu Tala is also believed to have stayed at Latief's house.

In a significant victory against cross-border drug smuggling networks, the Tarn Taran Police have apprehended a drug smuggler associated with syndicates in Pakistan and the United States, seizing 15 kg of heroin in the process.
This action is part of the ongoing anti-narcotics initiative "Yudh Nashean Virudh," spearheaded under the directives of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, as confirmed by Punjab's Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Monday.
The suspect, identified as Harshpreet Singh from Roranwala, Amritsar, was arrested along with a white Activa scooter (bearing the registration PB 02 CJ 4165) used for his illicit activities.
This arrest follows the dismantling of another drug trafficking operation by Tarn Taran Police just a day earlier, which resulted in the apprehension of two smugglers and the seizure of 6 kg of heroin.
DGP Yadav disclosed that a preliminary investigation indicates the heroin seized was part of a larger smuggling network orchestrated by Gurnam Kallowal, a smuggler based in the USA, with ties to a Pakistani accomplice known as Pahalwan, who deployed drones to transport the drugs across the border. Harshpreet Singh's role was to collect these consignments near the border for distribution to local dealers while remitting proceeds through hawala networks as directed by his US-based handler.
Further investigations are underway to trace the broader network's connections and operatives involved in this operation.
Providing insight into the operation, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Tarn Taran detailed that upon receiving credible intelligence regarding Harshpreet's activities, the CIA team, under the supervision of SP Investigation Ajay Raj, DSP Goindwal Sahib Atul Soni, and DSP Special Crime Gurinder Pal Nagra, conducted a targeted operation. Singh was arrested in Rakh Sarai Amanat Khan as he attempted to deliver the drug load using his scooter.
Efforts continue to map out the entire supply chain of this syndicate, focusing on suppliers, intermediaries, and consumers, while determining the total volume of drugs trafficked by the suspect. More detentions and seizures are anticipated in the near future, SSP added.
The incident has been filed under FIR No. 66, dated March 31, 2025, in accordance with section 21(c) of the NDPS Act at the Sadar Tarn Taran Police Station.

Punjab's Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister, S. Gurmeet Singh Khudian, announced that the state government has transferred Rs. 27.79 crore to 20,229 farmers who adopted the water-saving Direct Sowing Rice (DSR) technique during the 2024 Kharif season.
He revealed that 2.53 lakh acres were directly sown with paddy in 2024, marking a 47 percent increase compared to the 1.72 lakh acres in the 2023 Kharif season. Rs. 4.34 crore was initially disbursed to over 9,500 farmers in March 2025, and the remaining amount has now been transferred to the beneficiaries' bank accounts.
The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann, has been actively promoting the adoption of Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) to conserve water and encourage sustainable agriculture practices.
Minister Khudian explained that the state government offers an incentive of Rs. 1,500 per acre to farmers who use the DSR method, eliminating the need for transplanting seedlings and significantly reducing water consumption. This initiative aims to combat groundwater depletion and supports the state's efforts towards agricultural sustainability, water conservation, and environmental protection.
