Avoid unilateral action to change status-quo: India on Taiwan-China tensions

India on Friday raised concerns over the rising tensions in Taiwan as it urged for restraint and avoidance of unilateral actions to change status quo.

The Ministry of External Affairs called for de-escalation of tensions & efforts to maintain peace & stability in the region.

Responding to a question on Taiwan MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, "Like many other countries, India too is concerned about this development (in Taiwan). We urge the exercise of restraint, avoidance of unilateral actions to change status quo, de-escalation of tensions & efforts to maintain peace & stability in the region."

On Beijing's 'One-China' remark, Bagchi said India's relevant policies are well known and consistent and don't require reiteration

The ongoing developments in the autonomous region of Taiwan have escalated in the wake of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit as Washington promised that it will not let anyone isolate the region.

China reacted sharply to her visit as it warned of ramifications and called for no interference in the self-ruled island, which it claims as its own.

Pelosi's visit followed week-long military drills near Taiwan by PLA. The drill was culminated on Wednesday with successful completion of various missions, reported China's Global Times.
